Do deities want to be our friends?

Post by gentlelamb »

I'm a lot different from the people I live with in town and at home...I'm really just kinda fragile. I just want someone to be a good friend to me, because I'm a good friend back... I know it's weird that I have this childlike view on things but in my opinion, life was a lot easier as a kid... people weren't as mean and you weren't expected to do heart breaking things. My question is, do deities want to be our friends and talk to us and be nice to us and hang out with us?

Hi Gentlelamb. I think it depends. Some gods and goddesses have different aspects that they embody. If looking for a more gentle and warm connection I might not look to Hecate, Nyx or Lillth....not to say that one doesn't have a "relationship" with them. Their energy isn't exactly friendly warm energy....though that may come.....it's different. Maybe look to goddesses and gods having more to do with the home and warmth? Goddesses like Hestia, Brigid, Quan Yin and the like....

I don't know if deities are exactly like people and want to be friends and "hang out". I know I connect to certain ones and "talk" to them. It's okay to get comfort from this.

It sounds like you are going through a tough time. I hope you are able to make a connection in life and in spirit that lets you feel comfort.

I'm sure others can offer some good suggestions.

It's hard to say that deities just want to be our buddies. Deities usually have a particular function or purpose in the world, which often comes first for them -- having a personal relationship with humans is usually secondary. I know of deities that are kind, caring, comforting, and compassionate, who care about us and want to guide us (think Demeter or Guanyin). Others are a little more stern, or have a particular reason for interacting with humans, or give us tests and challenges.

You may wish for a relationship with deities as an idealized substitute for imperfect human relationships (and I have often been guilty of wishing the same thing), but from the people I know who are engaged in personal relationships with deities, that can be a dangerous assumption to make. Many agree that the gods have agency and their own desires, and relationships with the gods can be fraught with communication difficulties, which in some ways make them harder to navigate than relationships with fellow humans.

I'm sure this is not the answer you were looking for. I will echo what Becks said -- I hope you can find relationships in this world that will help fill the void in your life. I have found this forum to be a very supportive place with friendly people -- I encourage you to get to know the people here!

I don't think you're stupid for wanting that relationship, and I hope you didn't take that from my message. I am merely saying that relationships with deities are often extremely complex, not least because communicating with deities is actually very tricky. Deities might not be here just to be friends, but that doesn't mean that they can't love and care for us -- they just have a different role to play.

It's just that I had this experience with Gaia once where I was having a panic attack in the middle of class once and I was on the verge of tears and then all of a sudden I got this image in my brain of being in a field and being cradled by a tree and just really being consoled by this almost woman like entity of the tree and I felt like instantly better and calmed down. I knew it was Gaia and ever since then I just always thought deities wanted to look after you and care for you and be your friend. I know I'm dumb.

Gentlelamb, that seems like a very beautiful and powerful experience. Some deities like Gaia are indeed very caring -- and there are a lot of ways of being caring, some of which includes caring like a mother (which is how I think of Gaia), and caring like a friend.

Do you think Gaia meant anything by that or do you think she was just helping me out? Because I havent had a lot of energy or sensed a lot of presence from her but I could be not looking hard enough. It's just that now I'm thinking about it again it kinda sounds like a sign from her but I could be getting my hopes up.

It's worth exploring, but again, don't neglect human relationships as well!

Not only is every deity different, every person is different... and so, every person's relationship with any one deity will be different than someone else. You are not stupid for your experiences, and if you feel happy and loved working with Nyx do not discount that. Hekate was also on that list, and she absolutely has her dark sides, but she is also known to be the savior of the suffering. Who knows how she will appear to someone. Just know that relationships are always complex, and if you enter into a deeper relationship with any deity you will likely see the other aspects of them, and some lessons they bring might not always be so easy.

a couple nights ago i was trying to channel nyx into my right before bed meditation and i kept chanting her name in my head, you know like reaching out for her, and then i felt her presence. I forget what i started to say to her, maybe it was something like, is there anything you want to teach me or any kind of wisdom you would like to share with me, but before i could fully think it she transformed into this goblin/monster/demon looking thing and started dancing with this kind of weird mix of emotions on her face. it was like she was laughing at someone she didnt like getting in trouble or something. it was an evil grin. i didnt really understand what that meant or why she took that form but if thats the other side of her im going to see if i pursue a friendship with her, then i guess thats not that bad. it was a little creepy and unsettling because she looked like one of the monsters i used to have nightmares about when i was little, but i didn't think much of it.

Relationships with deities have a lot of give and take, just like relationships with people. Nyx may have things to teach you. Even a gentle lamb, in the animal kingdom, grows into a protective ewe or a fierce ram. We're not going to address the subject of lamb chops. Stretch yourself a little. The only stupid question is the on you don't ask.

It really depends. The Mesoamerican gods and Mesopotamian gods saw humans as their slaves, that might not be every god, however. Just that traditionally, this was how the gods saw humans.
I am the Earth, The Sun and the Stars
And I am the also the Moon
I am all animal and birds,
And I am the outcast as well, and the thief
I am the low person of dreadful deeds,
And the great person of excellent deeds
I am Female. I am Male and I am Neuter.
