It's called a geode and can be as old as 240 million years
A number of different types of crystals can form within a geode, but typically this is how Amithyst is found. Yours looks to be a Quartz.
Basically it's a petrified "hole". A mouse or some other animal for example might have tunneled into the lava bed. After some collapse, a portion of that tunnel may have remained to become lined with limestone. Some may be the result of a gas bubble.
With water saturation other minerals (Chalcedony) would have been layered inside the "egg" and eventually crystal begin to grow.
When I was a kid we used to find them with solid cores. Those are called thunder eggs.
