Labyrinths

Has anyone here tried walking a labyrinth before? I just did a bunch of reading on them and I'm very intrigued. I can see a lot of interesting benefits in this type of meditation. The only one I currently have access to is the finger labyrinth I downloaded, though. I'll try it when I get home tonight.

could you give me the basic idea if what this is? for moment there i thought you were taking theseus and the minotaur a little too seriously.

It's a serious idea, Sobek. Here we have mazes and spiral earthworks, often called 'troytowns'. I think the purpose is to learn how 'to find your way' to the heart or centre. Microcosm - Macrocosm, the story of Theseus is very allegorical, like all mysteries. It's not just about getting to the centre but finding your way back to the start, also. Sometimes help comes too, from unexpected sources, killing 'the monster' is part of this. Beginning to make sense now? It's late here and I'm tired but this is interesting. I am rusty but I'll see what I have, that may be helpful. This is a very old method of connecting to your inner self, and more.

I haven't but I used to work with a lady who was an Unitarian and she had. She had told me about it once and said it was a very spiritual experience.

I will say, my favorite Christians are the Unitarians.

I looked through my own stuff and realised I need to re- buy[?] some books which I used to have and take better notes also. I had info. on this,myself, but I can't find it. The joy of a chaotic household! lol.

Sobek, the Cretan labyrinth that the minotaur stories are from is actually real, except that it's a maze not a labyrinth. The ruins still exist apparently. It's story is in several of these links

And the Unitarians are my favorite too. We had our Open Ritual for Yule this past sunday at the Unitarian Church downtown LOL

There is some pretty good infomation there and it has inspired me to walk the Labyrinth while meditating. This is new info for me and I love trying new thing's out like this.

I never realised the Labyrinth was such a christian thing though

It is and it isn't. I wouldn't worry about that so much as the journey since I've found references to many cultures using them. I found a Labyrinth Society and several organized labyrinth walks in my city that definately aren't Christian. The 'permanent' labyrinths are mostly on church grounds, though. I'm waiting for a response to join the next one.

Like most things, Christianity robbed the labyrinths and mazes from earlier cultures. Here in Scotland we have rock carvings which are neolithic and are of labyrinths and mazes, similar to some of the sites pictures from above links.

Yeah, I can't wait till I go to Scotland in a couple years. I found the site for the Edinburgh labyrinth and I'd like to try it out, or find other nice ones around!
