Elves are said by some to be an extraterrestrial race ("The El") that made Terra (one of?) their home(s?). It is also said they account for those we have historically referred to as "angels." Who knows. Tolkien may have been given file information about various intergalactic species, to present a kind of "disclosure," for various reasons.
