Little brass bowl, for what?

Post by Firebird »

Hi all!
I picked this up at a givaway.
Little things have always interested me.
It looks to be brass, and is is not much deeper than the penny pictured next to it. ..which is there for size comparison.
The small spout makes me think mini gravy bowl  but I'm failry certain that is not it's primary function.
Does anyone know what it is and what it is used for?
I will likely use it to mix small batches of oil. The pour spout will be perfect for decanting into dram size bottles.
Anyway...squeeeeee! It's so cool :flyingwitch:

It's a little oil lamp. The wick rests in the spout. They're often used in Hindu devotionals, but other religions use them, too.

Is it missing it's lid? Or is it meant to be open air like that? Sure wouldn't hold much oil but I would love to try that. Sesame oil or......?
Thanks Siona.

Yep, they're meant to be open like that. :) I found a picture of a similar one so you can see what I mean.

I use similar sized lamps, but with upright wicks. They hold about a teaspoon or two or oil, not very much, but they burn longer than you'd expect. Sesame oil is fine, I hear the wealthy of ancient Egypt loved to use sesame oil in their home lamps for the scent. Olive oil is another option. Ghee, clarified butter, can also be used. I actually prefer them to tealights or other candles because the olive oil is a good offering to burn for the Greek deities I honor.

Also, for natural oils, you want a natural, uncoated cotton wick, where the fibers aren't twisted tightly together. They will suck up the oil easier, and in a more even way. The wick will last for several uses, only a little actually burns away with each use.

:D Thank you so much Soinia...had wondered if it was a lamp, but it just seemed too small. Tea lite size, I love it! That photo looks exactly like the one I have!
I have lots wicks too ...I can't wait to try it as a lamp.
I wonder if a few drops of essential oil will add fragrance or at least the energy of the oil would be present if it was burned during a particular working?
:fairy:

Still I think its going to work great for pouring my blended oils into the tiny bottles. I love free stuff ::coolglasses::
