a fairy once dreamed that she was a mountain

Post by Xiao Rong »

A bit of unnecessary context: This is my first time dabbling in poetry in at least 4 or 5 years, but lately I've been thinking about the element that I have the hardest time connecting to, which is earth. This is what came to me last night. Let me know what you think!

a fairy once dreamed that she was a mountain

she can dance on the limbs of a snowflake,
and sometimes surfs the wind on a blade of grass
- she likes to walk tightrope on a spider's web
(about which the spider is none too pleased).

but sometimes when a stiff breeze blows
it takes her days to find her way home,
and by the pond she tiptoes on lilypads with care
lest the frogs mistake her for a fly.

once she fell to a deep, deep sleep
and she fancied strangely that she
was no small sprite but

a towering mountain peak who wears
rivers as girdles and clouds for a crown,
her face cut with lines, all crags and sheer cliffs.
she has but to dig her toes deep to find
the very fire of the womb of the world.
her sprawling curves are rich earth from a nameless age;
in her rolling bosom the trees drink deep for life.
a season passes in the space of her pulse,
but when she dances in rage, all the birds take flight.
she need only stand in the fullness of herself,
mighty, proud, resolute, and
the fiercest of storms can only ruffle her hair -

the buzz of a bee and the dream is dispelled,
fracturing into motes of dew and dust,
and the fairy is left only with a yearning
in her hummingbird heart
to be a giantess of stone.

You're a very good writer, Xiao (forgive me if I've misspelled your name in other threads. When it's not in front of me I can't get the vowels in the right order.)

That was beautiful. I usually prefer rhyming poetry, but not everyone likes it to rhyme. I really think you could write poetry or fairytale books for children. It's easy to imagine the picture you're describing.

Wow. Initially, I'm not really found of prose, or not rhyming poems, but you are truly gifted. I haven't read something as beautiful and imagery providing as this.
Thank you for sharing your work Xiao. And I agree with Starwitch, you should write more !
