For me I have allways had an affinity with certain animals, now that has changed over the years and it's only been recently that I started pondering about it and looking up info on the net. A totem animal lends its spirit to you when you need the characteristics of that particular animal. When I was younger (like 5 and 7) I was drawn to the kingfisher and the puffin. Having read up on these 2 totem animals I can see, looking back, that I was in great need of their guidance. The same goes with the seahorse, that has stayed with me for a good few years now.
And the bat came to me in a dream and during a meditation. I guess I am more open to receiving them and recognising them now.

I got lucky (ha!) and got two totems: a blackbird and a falcon. Surprisingly, when I researched their meanings, their specialties tend to compliment one another - and make sense with where I am on my path.

Come, heart, where hill is heaped upon hill:
For there the mystical brotherhood
Of sun and moon and hollow and wood
And river and stream work out their will.

Mine is an eagle and it has taken me since last year to figure it out. Why? Because my aunt passed away last May of brain cancer and since she's passed, whenever I think about her, I'll see an eagle. It freaked me out at first because I wasn't really sure if it was just coincidence or if it was a sign from her but now I know that not only is it a sign that she's with me, but I definately feel like the eagle is my totem animal since it fits with my personality and where I want to go in my life. I've always had a great respect for them. I used to work with eagles and other birds of prey at a Raptor rehabilitation centre. My favourite part of the day was sitting in a cage with an eagle named Gabby and just watching him trot around, eat his fish and take a bath in his little stone fountain. It was so cool because he didn't seem to care that I was sitting there. He would just continue on his merry little way. It was great.
