Coffee grounds

Post by Kassandra »

I throw away a lot of coffee grounds. I've seen people put them on the soil around their plants. Is this a good use of them? I've seen people do the same with egg shells.

Gardeners do this as a natural way to keep garden pests at bay.

Coffe repels ants.
Crushed eggshells are a deterant for slugs and snails.

Pine needles also make a great mulch and soft-underbelly-plant-eater-pest deterrent as well. (Snails, slugs, etc.) It's a great way to recycle a holiday tree, too- if you have/had one.

Coffee grounds and pine or spruce needles also add acidity to the soil, so a caution, if your soil is already fairly acidic you may want to avoid doing this, but certain plants (azaleas come to mind) love acidic soil so read up on them and use your coffee grounds where they are growing.

I grind garlic cloves and sprinkle them all over the soil.

I'm another advocate of sprinkling plant soil with a light layer of coffee grounds. Seems to work pretty good. I don't know about PINE NEEDLES though, MOONSTONE! (nudge, nudge, light tap on shoulder, slaps back of her head! ) sniff, sniff. You must have forgotten about me.

Coffee grounds can be composted, I've seen articles about people who get used grounds from coffee shops to compost.

i know that this has nothing to do with gardening but if you are ever in a pinch and some one has an open wound ( expecially on the head)loosely packing it with coffee grounds or use tea packets will cause it to insta scab.

On the "egg shell note" I learned the hard way to make sure to wash off the eggshell throughly. I washed them off but not well enough and I had gnats all over my house LOL

They never bothered me. But most of the snails and slugs I have "play" on an old tree stump I have and leave my other plans alone. I guess I wouldn't much care for them if they were hurting my plants, but they aren't, so I enjoy their presence. :)
