I am a Witness

I am a Witness
Selina Barrett

Here I stand; I've stood...for years
Watching the grass beneath me grow,
The trees above me twist towards the sky,
And the soil beneath me dropping like snow.
I am silent. I am a witness.

I face the edge of the earth below
My feet rest one step from the cliff
I face the future, but it will not show
My body is seized with fear.

The past haunts me- I cannot let go
The future frightens me- But I must move on
Overwhelmed- My mind and thoughts are slow
And the ground beneath me begins to crumble
I dive screaming into the infinite abyss below

I pierce the water's still surface- all sound fades to nothing
The whispering memories are all I know
And at long last, the whispering has gone
Finally- I find a place to grow
At long last- I discover peace
