Lookie what husband brought me from the Long Valley Caldera. Specifically from the Crowley Lake area.
Obsidian eggs for grounding and healing. I may use the larger ones for heating and placing on sore muscles.

Wow. That's nifty.
I've only seen the "processed" obsidian like they sell in the stores, never seen them with a volcanic outer "shell" like these. So, this must mean a lot of rocks we see that we think are plain old granite or something could be neato crystals like obsidian and such on the inside, just doesn't look like it outwardly? Hmm. 'Cause I never would have guessed these round rocks were obsidian.

I know, right?
I went and looked around online to see if I could find out more about them. Heck, I couldn't even find a picture.
He said they were everywhere. I included a few broken ones so we could see inside.
The area is right in the center of an ancient volcano, maybe they just bubbled to the surface that way??? Or are they like Apache tears perhaps, which are spit out of a volcano like little droplets of glass.
Hum, I'll keep searching. I'm really liking them.

I never knew that about apache tears stones. I could see that now though, given their shape. I've seen lots of amethyst and rose quartz still in the in their stone "casing" like this, but I think they were mined from the Earth that way. Yes, perhaps these obsidian were "spit out," and then cooled instantly.
