What I meant by nexus, is a place where spirits come together and intersect. Similar to an astral temple but that allows multiple people in. Your campfire sounds like one of those to me. Most astral temples tend to be personal and guarded from outside entry.

Mine is an empty void, but it manifests whatever I want at the time. Often changing between a plains with tall grass, and a single tree, to a an endless sky with nothing but blue and clouds. I always go there before i journey into the astral plane.
