Also, some herbs really affect my allergies so burning them is a big no-go for me... in these cases I will substitute whatever crystals that also hold the same properties as the herb that I am wanting to use. Burning too much sage really messes up my breathing, so there will be times that I will lig...

I'm sure you could find other ways to feel connected to the herbs other than smell. Noticing texture, how it feels or tastes (if it is safe to consume), how is reacts to fire or water... noticing and appreciating these things may help.
