House plant pests

Every time I buy potting soil to repot houeplants they seem to come with these little nat like flies. The flies hatch a day or two after repotting the plant and then they are everywhere and I can't seem to get rid of them. I have tried numerous home remedies, but to no avail. Can anyone suggest something please?

I wish I could say those kind of things are the cause of the deaths of any house plants my wife brings home. Unfortunately, it seems to be me that gives them the kiss of death.

I have heard of people who keep reptiles on this kind of soil "nuking" it in the microwave before using it. I am not sure if the same can be done with soil going to be used for plants?
