Can a human be a familiar?

So, what the subject is asking. I heard from someone that in rare cases, a human can end up being someone else's familiar. Is this true? Has anyone experienced this, or have heard of it as well? I just find it rather interesting and want to know more about it.

They can also be called spirit guides, guardian spirits, or ancestor spirits. Different cultures have vastly different ways and methods of working with spirits, but it's fairly common as a concept in some traditions of the craft, while practically ignored in others.
