unacceptive dad....please help!

Discussion of Christianity and other religious systems. How can we explain our faith to Christians? How can you merge your faith in Jesus with your belief in the metaphysical?

unacceptive dad....please help!

Post by nature_in_control »

Hi there,
My dad snapped at me the other day because I had a nightmare, so went to go tell my dad. he just randomly said "well maybe its all that work you do with tarot cards, why can't you just be a normal christian kid like everyone else!" and the next time I saw him he said "stop doing those tarot cards! what if you see something you dont like! what if they say youll die tommorrow! your messing with forces that you dont understand!"
has anybody got any advice besides doing all this behind his back coz I really love my dad and dont like lying to him
Please help!

*sigh*

To be honest.. it depends what your dad is like, you could try giving him some info on paganism and tarot cards, perhaps show him the forum (but dont tell him your username!) or print off a couple of pages that show pagans are generally decent people. But apart from that there isnt much you can do.

some people are blind to the world around them, and they cant be helped.

he says you are meddling with things you dont understand. Ask him if he understands his God. If he says yes then technically he is bringing his god down to the level of humans, if he says no then he has no ground to stand on.

Should be a fun answer, something along the lines of "dont question god" "go to your room" or "i dont need to understand him"

Interesting. Maybe you should ask him why he thinks this way. Usually people who disapprove of such things do so because they deny that they work, or exist, however as he said "your messing with forces that you dont understand!"

Implying that he believes there is truth or power behind them. So what exactly does he understand that he thinks you do not?

I beleive Xal gave some good advice.

Anyway, I can only give my own experience and hope you learn something from it. My father is a christian, and beleives himself to be self-retous to the fullest. But it is to the point where his beleifs bring him down. He holds onto them so tightly that anything outside of them brings very harsh critisism and put-downs (how jesus-like right haha). Anyway, I've litterally tried so hard to the point of tears to help him be more open, but no matter what I do nothing would work in a million years.

Sometimes people must learn on their own, hell he even says that about me! "I guess you'll have to learn the hard way." With me inwardly saying "You too dad..." and then we both say "I love you."

I'm not sure if that helps, but the biggest thing I learned from that was that you cannot change an unwilling person. No matter what. Don't beat yourself up for it or by throwing yourself under the bus trying to change him. Send him love and affection, and quietly practice tarot when he is not around. You don't have to lie, but if he does not see you doing it -- it will not be in his mind as much.

Also, he may not be completly wrong, I have heard stories of tarot drawing evil in... maybe it's just a myth, but I'm always sure to ground myself and ask for protection by my spirit guides and gaurdian angel before each reading.

Much love,

Nature,

First, definately great advice given so far. I want to add to it by not only talking to your dad but also try explaining the history of the Tarot to him as there is an actual history behind them. Another thing you may want to do is to let him know that you respect his beliefs but he needs to respect yours because that is what love is about...respect and understanding. I hope this helps a bit and I wish you the best! :)
