The Dancing Trees

Post by Falcon_Heart27 »

This is a poem that I wrote about walking through Allerton Park in Monticello, IL, during the night. It's an absolutely magical place that resonates with me deeply, and I have a lot of love for the place.

PLEASE do not repost anywhere else without my permission. Although, please feel free to comment! :)

"The Dancing Trees" by Sage L. (Falcon_Heart27)

Silent feet and silent lips
We wind into the forest,
A dark procession

The night is heavy
And our breathing, still.

Keep your balance
Through the ages
Wide eyed children
Ancient sages

Find their way to the center there
Where the trees look like they're dancing

The trees look like they're dancing
Silhouetted against the sky
They twist and turn in nature's perfect elegance

And you must remember
That everything you touch
Is living, or came from something
That once lived

Is moving,
Faster than comprehendible,
And will continue
To move.

The trees danced slowly through the night
I turned my eyes to the summer sky
My feet followed the path, my eyes followed the stars
So I wandered in two directions
And wandered far

I found myself
In the middle of a maze
Constructed in the greatest beauty

Oh, my palace!
Twist, turn, writhe,
My beautiful labyrinth!

My home.

Our dark procession
Came across a clearing
Where the trees were so tall
They kissed the goddess Artemis, the moon
And there was no sound
Not even from the wind nor birds
As we filed in and sat in the wild pews

The air smelled like pine;
The darkness felt like a warm embrace
And then the wise council
Drifted to the stage

Circled 'round the bonfire
That spat sparks into the night
Flying, dancing, laughing
Spitting tongues of flame and light

We bowed and gave our offerings
They gave us lessons in return
To love and be loved
Is something we must learn

I saw shapes that night
Shifting in the trees
Flickering behind the masquerade
They laughed and grinned at me

Oh, my palace!
Twist, turn, writhe,
My beautiful labyrinth!

A disarming maze of forest
Spat us back into the world

We were raw, we were impassioned

Branches caressed my face as I passed by

We sang loud as we returned
Our voices echoed across the skies

Until the whole valley was filled
Under hill and over tree
With the beauty of three hundred voices
Learning how to see

And come the next night after
We were dancing like the trees.
