Anyway, from what I've gathered shamans usually come in contact with plant spirits after having injested, and used the plant to it's fullest and actually go so far to have a near-death experience where they may seen visions. After this it is said they become one with the spirit and no amount of its poison can ever effect the shaman.

I read this while researching the tobacco plant used in spiritual gatherings.

It made me respect tobacco so much more. It is the plant of power, and most companies instill greed and harm in cigerettes, which is why they make so much money and people die. I now do a cleansing before I smoke and ask the spirit of the tobacco to cleanse the cig and raise it's power to it's full-potent strength of good. I offer the tobacco to the gods and elements.
