Everything Under the Moon

I guess the title says it all, anyway, I've been interested in witchcraft for as long as I can remember, yet my experience and knowledge are zero since I've never been exposed to any heplful information. I have no interest in follwoing Wicca as I was born and brought up as a Christian and, although I'm not a faithful believer, so to speak, it still feels like too much like a part of my beliefs.

So I was hoping someone could recommend me some books, but preferably, some websites (I don't have a job and I'm quite short on money... I'm saving every penny for something else at the moment) that could perhaps enlighten me a bit because so far, what I've read, confused me a little, sort of like, I can see the end, the middle, but no beggining to the story.

Well on to a few questions... my mother has this thing... she thinks that if she tells certain people about certain stuff (mainly a friend of hers), it will all go down the drain, such as job failing. Sometimes it looks like it but sometimes it looks just like a coincidence. Could a person, unintentionally, make someone's "plans" fail due to jealousy? I can't quite explain myself better, so sorry for not being clear.

I'm new to witchcraft as well, but I just wanted to throw my two cents in on this post. You said you are short on cash, but you can always go to the library and check out books that are recommended to you. Don't know if you thought about that or not. Also, you could try Ebay as an option as well. I don't know any really good books. The only book I can honestly say that I have read most of was Teen Witch by Silver RavenWolf. I only read it because when I got it I was a teen, and when I tried reading the adult books, they confused me so much. So I figured I would read a book geared toward people with the same mentality as me. lol That sounds bad to say it like that, but I don't mean it in a bad way. Now, most people have mixed feelings about Silver Ravenwolf, but like I said--I'm just starting out too, and I don't know if this is a quality book or not. I haven't read anymore books really than that one.

My local library has nothing good on the subject, absolutely nothing, they have on shelf dedicated to generally, religion and the occult and that's it. Just to give you an idea, in my local library there's one Anne Rice book, one Marion Zimmer Bradley book and so on, so the chances of me finding anything recommended by anyone are quite null...
And about eBay, well let's just say I'm not that fond of it. I'm trying to get a job but until then I'll have to rely on the internet but any book suggestions are always welcome, maybe not for now but for later.

Well, I didn't know where you lived, but I see what you mean about lack of choices at the library. Libraries that are in major cities are great for finding endless amounts of books on certain subjects. I live in a small city now, and the choice of books is so sad. Heck, when I was looking up stuff about ghosts, they had one book on ghosts in a state far away from where I live. It's like.....ummm ok.

Did you check the section on the message boards that is called Learning Tools? It's a place where people can list books/dvds/etc. Maybe you will be able to find something in that section that someone has recommended before.

P.S. I've heard people rave about the author Scott Cunningham--saying that his books are really good. And there is a book called: True Magick by Amber K that people said was good too. Hope that helped better than the other post.

Yes I've checked it and written down a few names but sometimes I feel a bit confused if I should pick a book that seems directed to someone that wants to follow the wiccan path, something that I don't want to do, that's why I asked here, to sort of get something a bit more specific (can't you tell that I'm quite confused lol). The articles are thoughtful, they have follow up links, they have access to searching for communities in your locality (there are even listings for Perth, Western Australia, which I love). Give it a shot. It's beginner friendly, and a really great starting place for everyone.

I love websites! I serch for things all day long. Witches Voice (witchvox) is a must for anyone intested in wicca it also gives you local shopes and covens and some events. This is a link i go to sometimes for basic things.

But thay also have some things on there thats....off to say the lest and you need to know the besics...like we dont sacrafice animals......to determin if the website is worth it or if its giberish you dont wanna mess with. Thanks Ravenari and Addalaide, I've been reading a few things from those websites and I can see that there's lots of information to absorve. it will take some time but if I want to dedicate myself to this I might as well get to work.

I have been reading sooo much and its probly past my year and a day ( witch is when i plan to dedicat myself ) but i have chosen the day after my birthday because that was when i truly had the freedom to learn as i wished on what subjects i wanted. After you get finished with all that ( i looked at the other site posted on like timerist or something and that alone is a whole lot to take in) I have other sites and hopefully i will have my online BOS up i can give you and every one ealse. Because i have alot of usless information my little brain can only hold so much of it! But you are on the right path.

Such as has been described is the basic concept of the "evil eye" &' most folklore recognizes it as a real possibility that can be either intentionally or unconsciously caused.

Using the Psalms with candle magic is another traditional practice & Magic with the Psalms by W.A. Oribello is detailed how-to. The Idiot's Guide to Alchemy" can intro the concepts of energy magic without Wicca. There are posts listing psalm uses on the board in the Christian section.

As quite a beginner myself, I decided to read Margot Adler's book Drawing Down the Moon, which gives the reader a very high level view of Wicca, Druidism and other "Pagan" groups since the late 19th Century until now. It was first published in the 1970s, I think, but gets updated every couple of years. Very eye-opening and gave me a taste of what is out there and where many things came from (as well as an introduction to some of the popular names in the field).

I recommend it as it was pretty easy to read as well as being very thorough. I found a used copy on Amazon very promptly.

EDIT: as less than a novice, others may of course please correct me if her book is not accurate or informative.

I think it will go on my reading list.

I think Drawing Down the Moon is one of the classics & Margo Adler was highly respected. There's a couple old you tubes of interviews with her.
