Giant Sequoias in peril

...

So maybe this should be in prayers. .. (edit 6-2019 from prayers to nature)

Our nations big trees, actually the worlds biggest tree the Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia) are in a perilous position. The Grant Grove area is where some of these monster trees grow and the "Rough fire" that has raged in the Sequoia Kings Canyon area for weeks is encroaching upon them.
[EDIT= original link expired and was removed, look for inciWeb to get real time update on storms and fires etc... https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ ]

These are pretty hardy trees and some that are around 2,000 yrs old have seen many fires. Their thick outer bark is a great protector, but the drought has many of the trees in an unhealthy state. They say if the top story of the tree gets too damaged when the fire goes through...those are the tress that will likely succumb. These trees are and endangered species.
Pray for rain I would say, and send your protective sheilds to the area.

These parks have been a favorite camping area for my family as I was growing up. I was probably 6 months old the first time I went....It's heartbreaking to see this area getting burned, yet all apart of the process :|

I've been up close and personal with those trees and the incredible feeling of age and peace that you find among them is beautiful - would be a tragedy if they got burned away.
I will send vibes, as best I can.

I completely agree.

The map in the first link shows the fire perimeter.
The fire has reached the edge of Grant Grove...rain, please....rain.

Is the U.S. Forest service actively fighting that fire? I would hope so considering the value placed in the ecotourism. Often which fires get fought is an economic descision.

Yes they are but the perimeter is really big now...frequently in a Natl. forest they let it burn, I guess parts of it are really remote, but they do have some sort if defensive line along the edge of the grove.
It's interesting, I've been watching the map of the perimeter and the shapes they have taken on ...at one point there was a finger of the fire running down the mountain toowards Grant Grove looked kind of like a dragon, now its sort of a goat thing looking back over its shoulder. Going to continue examining the shapes. Wondered if I could imagine it taking on a whale like form to bring a watery energy in....and thereby extinguish the fire. ...well. It's a thought.
...Zoom in on the perimeter map in the first link of this thread..Grant grove is near the bottom of the map, make that bigger till you see Grant Grove Village, Grant grove is just above that to the left a little.
We usually stay in the village and picnic in an area along the road to the grove.
Kings Canyon Lodge has already burned down a couple weeks ago, .though we never stayed there I am in awe of their vintage gas pumps that remain standing and are apparently still functional.

The biggest tree in the world in volume the General Sherman is not in this grove but a good deal south in a different part of the park.

Continued protective thoughts please.

Still sending vibes and asking the Rain to head over that way too. We've had enough the last week in Germany so I'm asking it to think about going Westward and find that fire...

Yeah!..the weather is helping, some drizzle and higher humidity last night!! Good show folks!
Little bit more moisture in other areas too, so many places in California are on fire right now.

Hopefully the raincloud will reach you also harmonious crow. :fairy:

On a slightly different note, saw this video in the visitor center there several years ago. A testament to what happens if a tree falls in the forrest!

Love how the guy says his car was vanquished

Blessed be the tree,

Will be interesting to see the recovery from this destructive fire.
Really need this time in the woods, it so healing. I guess it's what is now called forest bathing. Can't wait to get my "green" on.

Thanks Juniper, ya it really is a pretty amazingly magical place. Looking forward to bathing in the green glow of the meadow, and snoozing in the hammock, with the giant trees just right there in the campground.
I hope to send you all a photo. The herbs in this area are much different than So Cal, so it will be great fun identifying them.
