Forgotten Memories

Post by Anubisa »

Hey everyone,

First, I don't know if I have posted this in the right area, so feel free to move it. So, I am an epileptic. I had my first episode at 8 hours old. So I've had seizures all my life. I've had grand mal and petit mal seizures (they now call them tonic-clonic and absence seizures) seizures. Since I have had grand mal seizures I have ended up hitting my head several times and I have short-term and long-term memory loss. There are memories I want to remember and I know there has to be a way to access them. I talked about seeing a hypnotist, but I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions about recalling memories. Thanks.

I think a hypnotist might be your best option, I've heard they can help with all kinds of lost memories. Maybe acupuncture? They help with lots of issues too.
I write notes in a certain book when I'm having de ja vu kinds of memories, but I have a horrible memory overall and wish short term memories were easier, ptsd prevents that.
I personally like looking at pictures to jar memories. It would be helpful for others who are familiar with the pictures to help fill in the blanks, that might jar a memory.
best wishes in your quest Anubisa!

Thanks Firebird. I think that I will see about finding a hypnotist in my area.

Caution is needed recalling memories with hypnosis because we are unreliable narrator's of our own memories (which are often subjective) and memories dragged from the symbolic unconscious are coloured by it and by emotional content. To the unconscious such emotional memory hasn't happened, it is, in a very real way, still happening and being emotionally charged and symbolic can be prone to exaggeration, distortion and misinterpretation.

I wouldn't discourage you at all, yet would say that any gold bought out the dark need's to be cooly examined in the cold light of day.

Okay. Thanks Corbin. Is there any other means besides hypnosis that might help?

My only experience of memory loss is from 'Covid Brain' which has much improved by daily mental exercise (I do a crossword every day now to sharpen my acuity) and complex ptsd / dissociation; brain chemistry and a survival instinct (adaptive and maladaptive), not any kind of brain 'injury'.

Given your circumstances I would suggest your first stop, if you haven't already, is discussion with a health care professional, who may shed more light or currently be unaware of your problem and secondly unaware it is causing you distress (an assumption on my part). There may be specialised therapies or meds available?

I would also recommend you keep a daily diary of regular and significant events, not only as an 'ad-memoire' but again as a practice that hones your mental acuity and focus.

Of the witchy side of things? Keep yourself open to 'triggers' - (example) keep your nose open for any scents that trigger a 'deja vu' stirring of memory as they may be used as a key to recollection (scent is the most primal sense connected to memory). Reminisce with other people you share a connected past with (accepting their memories are also subjective and often unreliable).

So keep your mind active and focus on the present(?).... also analyse the drive/need and specify what you feel you must recall - today is a much more immediate concern despite any frustration you may feel.

Be blessed.

Keeping a journal is a great idea. So then at least you have an account going forward.
Sorry about the covid-brain Corbin, hope that passes soon, crosswording is something my mom does too in order to keep the synapses firing, I on the other hand couldn't do a crossword to save my life :(. It's pretty messed up how these viruses can fry the wiring. Think my hep virus permanently cut some circuts.
I also keep in mind some memories are worth forgetting, LoL... by the way Anibusa, does it cause you pain when these events are happening? Sounds terribly frightening.

Covid Brain is weird, I will be mid-flow-conversation and it's like a wall suddenly dropping in front of me - I totally forget what I am talking about ... and either flounder to try to pick up the thread (there is no thread) or just have to say 'sorry, it's gone'.

I understand how people get frustrated and agitated over memory loss, it was at first extremely disturbing. Glad to say it's a lot better then it was yet it still occasionally happens.

I haven't had a grand mal seizure in over 4 years. However, back when I had them I would black out and fall. I would bite my tongue sometimes and wake up with a headache. The headaches are extremely painful. I was confused and didn't remember it happening. My last one, they took me to the hospital and I ended up having one there and they intubated me. I thought I was there for two hours and I woke up and had been there for two days. I couldn't speak because I had a tube in my mouth and had to use a white board to communicate. This is why I live with my parents. They are retired RNs. They know the signs. Thank goodness. I'll start keeping a journal, but hopefully I will be able to see a hypnotherapist about my memories soon.

Sounds terrible Anubisa, what a complete drag. That tube is such a pain in the throat. I bet this has frightened your parents even though they are in the field. By the way, I had a friend that was epileptic, and he found great relief in smoking pot. They have some pretty decent products out there these days. But do be wary getting it on-line, a reputable store is more reliable. Have you ever tried any? In any case, stay safe, K.

Brain games can be helpful if you stick with them , I tend to only play ma-jong though. smiley_dance

The brain fog is really horrible Corbin, you had enough on your plate without that, I'm really sorry to hear it, and I completely commiserate, for over 40 my virus had the same effect. I got horrible at interrupting people because I wasn't going to remember what I wanted to say and then if I did and went too far down one track I'd have to say, "oops never mind, I have no Idea where I was going with this" Still happens, to varying degrees. Only when I was first sick, did I have frequent complete brain cut off, slept a lot too though. I take a homeopathic nerve tonic which seems to help some. I hope you get some relief soon.

I think being cautious about the hypnotherapist is a good idea,
Blessings,

I play a lot of brain games on my phone like wordscapes and wordscapes unscrambled. I also do word search puzzles. Any other games you can think of?

Have you ever tried REMT (rapid eye movement therapy)? I has helped a lot of people with PTSD. I don't know if it would help recover memories but it may.

Woops, totally missed this, try the memory game, I have been playing it with my mom, you know...the one with little pictures on the cards, I really suck at it  so it's good for both mom and myself!

Firebird, If you try REMT let me know how it goes. I have only tried it once, but several people I know who have experienced severe trauma say it helps immensly.
