Question about new rule.

Post by Silas Nightfall »

"As of 2020, politics has been added to the list of things we can't discuss, although if we get enough liberal Democrats on the board, that will change"

Um, what about conservatives? There are conservative members and witches. Why the focus on liberal democrats? I'm not trying to incite anything but understand. It seems kind of tailored...

And please, don't just delete this if you don't like the question. Actually respond, I'm sure others may wonder. I'm a civil person. Blindly deleting something is censorship and is intolerant of other views, which is also in the rules.

It would seem to end badly in most cases.
We have already lost SnowCat to the issue. I hear people on facebook are getting unfriended left and right.
Were trying to keep it about witchcraft here,
This is the rule of the owner.

I have no issue with the rule itself. I want to know what following comment was about. It seemed to suggest that discussions would be allowed only if more liberal Democrats are present. Is this because there are more conservatives presently? Or because of a desire to outnumber them? Aren’t we all witches regardless of political affiliation? Why should it matter? I just need clarity on that last statement.

Yes.

“although if we get enough liberal Democrats on the board, that will change”

I mean, we’re all witches regardless. Even within our practice we disagree on some things. Why should this be any different? The way it reads sounds like they’ll only open discussions on that topic is if the Democrats vastly outweigh the conservatives. Isn’t that exclusionary?

Ya,... I get that we have different opinions, but like I said earlier these conversations usually end badly... (like people leaving or getting banned because they go rogue) I feel it along the lines of religion and politics, which in my view don't mix so well.

I don’t think you’re understanding the question. I understand and support avoiding politics. I want to know why the emphasis was on gaining more democratic members. Is there a belief that one cannot be Wiccan and conservative? That’s fine if so. I just need to know so I can decide if this group is worth sticking with. I don’t want to be part of a group that would shun me. Does that make sense?

Like I said, owner makes the rules and I would presume these are her views, but she is rarely here if ever. She popped several months ago to say she couldn't afford to support the board anymore, but had a change of heart and did a board update instead. This was in the midst of some political whatever was going on at the time and one thing lead to another....new rule, SnowCat gone. I didn't stand up because arguing about politics rarely leads to enlightenment and more often leads to someone getting banned.

While I do think the comment made by the owner of the site originally did mean that liberal and Democrat sided conversations that line up with her view would be allowed, I think the rest of us saw that as unfair and said “no politics” in general. And, honestly, it’s fine rule. It is a site related to witchcraft, not politics. There are plenty of forums about politics if that’s someone’s desire. If it’s your desire to leave our site over one person’s random comment, we can’t stop you. But, we hope you’ll stay and contribute to the conversations that are being had about witchcraft, etc.

Btw, the site owner made that discussion into a political discussion which is WAS NOT at all, at least not on my part... But she had her view that questioning official narrative must be coming from a certain point of view. I think the whole deal was totally ridiculous and I got indirectrly accused for being a supporter of him who shall not be named when in reality I couldn't give a toss about American politics or politics in general as I'm a Finn and totally apolitical person.

I think the no political discussion is a good idea. But I have a question about this too, who decides what is seen as a political discussion? What is off limits and what is not and who has the right to decide that?

For example, if I'm sceptical about something in the media, (I could go on for a long while about the recent rioting and how news are made about it.) if any of the admins disagrees, does it make it into a political discussion? If the thing I say is perceived to be in line with who the heck ever, does it make it into a political discussion? Who is to decide this? What I mean is that any topic could be turned to look like it must be politically driven even if its not...
By my feet the flowers of witchery abloom.

His original post was not directly linked to politics per se, though the content was too volatile and being concerned it would lead to huge conflict it was moved. Any moderator has that final say.

I agree that politics should be kept off the board, though things might intersect now and again as L.J.Hex mentioned. As a Witch who is also Conservative/Libertarian in political orientation myself, I've found this thread interesting. I actually dislike political discussions in forums that are not specifically about politics since it can detract from the main subject of the forum and people can end up hating each other/going off on a destructive tangent unnecessarily. Especially in times like these I'm glad the rule exists, even if I might be agreeing with a Liberal Democrat on some things they might not expect me to right now (yet still disagree with them on others.)

I agree. Fir now it should be avoided. Though this thread wasn’t meant to be political itself. I just wanted further understanding of the rule. The thread was made prior to the rule’s wording being updated.
