How do I teach an Autistic child?

Post by Star Shine »

My 10 yr old son is a higher functioning Aspergers but my 9 yr old is more severely Autistic and she is mentally around the age of 5...she plays with and talks to relatives who have passed on a regular basis so I know like me, she can see and hear them as I do. How can I help her develop these talents to her fullest?

Wow,
I wish I had some great ideas but I'm at a loss. My son, Alex, is 4 and has pretty severe autism. He's non-verbal at this point. One thing I've noticed is that anything put to music has a bigger impact. He also likes when I make books with pictures of him.

you may be able to translate that into some kind of story with pictures and songs using the themes you want to get across.

I would love to hear how it turns out!

I will try this...we have used books that we make together for other things...maybe I can incorperate the moon phases and such into little books for her:)...
Catherine was 5 1/2 when she became verbal...all the specialists told me she would probably never talk...and potty training finally happened when she was 8:)....Never give up hope...our children are amazing little people that with the use of alternative methods can progress:)

Well :D I have a cousin who is autistic. And he has been brought up pagan. My biggest advice would be to just listen to them and watch them. They will probably naturally exude their own strong points and help them to build on those. All kids love story telling and activities. Do things with them to excite their imaginations, through music, song, art, get outside and tell them stories. I don’t know how sever their conditions may be but you know your children better than anyone. Play up their strong points I know they have them!

My brother is autistic. My mother chose to bring him up Catholic, and while he was never taught the finer points of doctrine, he understands the concepts. Mom taught him that "God made us all", that he "loves us and watches over us", about heaven and that Jesus is God's son.

I'm sure your daughter would understand the concept if you put them in more concrete ways... for example "grandma talks to you from heaven (any word for the afterworld according to your beliefs" or "this circle keeps bad things out and lets good things in", etc...

Good luck!

Just talk to hear, and in a manner teach her the same way you would any other child, just make sure to repeat things like "don't be afraid of them" and such. With most children with a mental disability, patience and repetition are key or that's what my mother, who's a special education teacher, always says.

I don't have an answer, but I wanted to tell you about this NOVA documentary on PBS. I think you can watch the program from their website. Scientists are now starting to find the gene that causes autism. This could help so many people once they get all the science figured out.

I know this post is old but this may help someone else. My five year old has autism. We are lucky he is somewhat verbal and in a good school. You could do a social story. It's when you outline a topic simply and in steps. They did one for my son when he would be riding the bus and we used it for weeks before. Here is a site that might help.
