So I don't think I've been hexed or anything like that, but I've developed a bit of an interest in the different ways one can use folk magic to tell if they've been cursed.

The most popular way I've seen seems to come from Italian folk magic - you fill a bowl with water and drop three drops of olive oil in it. If they stick together in the middle you're fine, and if they scatter away from each other across the bowl you've been hexed.

Does anyone else know of these sorts of 'simple,' at home methods of determining if someone's been cursed?

I would simply do divination. Any quick fire ways would simply be observant - have there been quite a bit of bad luck situations, insomnia, appetite issues etc.

Pendulum divination would probably be the best.

I know that observation and divination are the most common, and perhaps most reliable ways, but I'm really looking for specific little 'rituals' various cultures may have had to tell.

I've heard of a way to tell if you're cursed with an egg. Actually, two ways

One is, in a jar full of water, break an egg and put it under your bed, where your head is. Leave it overnight and if in the morning it looks like "boiled", you are hexed.

The other way is, put the egg under your bed and in the morning break it into a jar of water. If the white looks like it's boiled, you are hexed.

It is actually said that these two methods remove minor curses.

This is not about a hexing per se, but about finding out if the evil eye bothers you which can be cast by someone like a curse, in Mexico.

There are different ways to interpret the egg to tell if you the evil eye is influencing you. I think the different ways are based on region.

As I said, I do realize that is probably the most common method out there...


The egg methods are very interesting! The evil eye angle is also a good one, I ran across another method relating to the evil eye - put a drop of olive oil onto your middle finger, and then let it drip into water. If it sinks it's because of the evil eye on you.
