I disagree about magazines. I like Reader's Digest, Woman's World, and First. I also purchase National Geographic occasionally. What I stay away from is gossip magazines.

I'm using Cool reader app on my phone and laptop. And while I agree it's not like a real book, I can't possibly afford to buy all the books I would like to read, especially when most are books I have to buy online and the shipping will cost me a fortune. So ebooks are my solution and Cool reader really is cool. And free.

I understand the LED backlight argument, it's not a new concept to me. I was actually genuinely curious if there was more to your reasoning behind preferring to use a physical book than an ereader. :)

My ereader has the LED backlight, but I'll be honest and say that I do have an hour-long pre-bedtime routine that keeps my sleeping schedules intact. So balance is a good thing.

I'm also not entirely sure it's a great idea to read Lovecraft before bed either, but I can't help it...

Well darn. I wish my phone had spell check. It has autocorrect, which I employ through out all of my posts from mobile.

Azure Lily,

I really and truly appreciate that you’re trying to spread happiness with others and to promote a positive self-image as well as to help boost others’ self-esteem. Starting to develop this at a young age is even better because it can help you a lot in the long run and makes navigating through your teenage years that much easier. However, I don’t necessarily agree with the manner of which you’re suggesting someone do so as I see some inconsistencies I’d like to point out based on observations from my personal struggles with this topic. Please don't take this as personal attack because it is very far from that. (:

I feel that the way you’re portraying this is a lot like body shaming and I don’t think that it will help others begin to feel good about themselves. To say that it’s alright for someone to be overweight due to a medical reason but it’s not okay if it’s not linked to a specific health condition could very easily cause those with lower self-esteem to think that they’re not a good person and not worth it. Taking care of your health is incredibly important, yes, and I understand that’s what you’re trying to get across but I don’t think that someone should have to physically change their appearance to be happy with who they are as a person. Now, if a medical professional tells you that you need to make some lifestyle changes because you are unhealthy then that’s an entirely different story but that really depends on the person’s sitaution. Everyone is equal, special and beautiful in their own way no matter the reason for getting to be how they are today. Telling someone that if they can change themselves they will be happier with who they are is neither true nor promoting positive cognitions. Someone should only change if they want to, not because they think it’ll cause more self-love. Self-image is important, yes (though I’d argue that self-esteem is more so), but it doesn’t mean physically altering your body to create enjoyment of one’s self. Boosting your self-esteem to see your current qualities and mannerisms as perfect will do wonders for someone’s self-image.

Changing your self-image doesn’t mean physically changing your appearance; it simply means changing the way you look at your appearance and personal qualities. After a positive self-esteem has been established, then I think that’s a good time to start looking at yourself and seeing if you want to change anything. However, I want to put emphasis on want. Someone who wants to change just because they want to is much healthier than changing because they feel an obligation from peers to do so. You can have a very strong self-image and self-esteem regardless of if you fit society’s standards of “beauty”. It just matters how you begin to see yourself. Anytime someone looks in the mirror they should be saying how beautiful they are with any flaws they might think they have; not dwell on what they’d like to change and how happier they’ll be once those changes occur. Any of the “flaws” I see in myself, such as some mannerisms I have from my mental illnesses or some physical attributes I may think aren’t great; I really don’t like to call them flaws. I simply call them my special little quirks because it’s these differences that make us all individually unique and wonderful as a person. It’s nothing that I’d like to change because it makes me who I am.

I’d also like to quickly point out that the amount of sleep recommended varies depending on age, gender, and other health conditions. I think it’s wonderful to suggest and promote a full night’s rest but someone needs to make sure they know the correct amount recommended for their specific grouping as to avoid lack of rest or even over sleeping which can be just as bad sometimes. Reading before bed is a wonderful suggestion as well, and while I do agree that using electronics before you rest has been scientifically proven to interfere with a full night of REM sleep; what you read really does not matter. Pictures can be calming for some while stimulating for others and I’ve honestly found that reading manga before bed has helped bring about a lovely night’s rest – and even sometimes amazing dreams where I don’t want to wake up (*coughcoughcough* Being married to Kyo from Fruits Basket. *dreamy sigh*). What I’m trying to get at is that there’s no “one shoe fits all” with this sort of thing and it’s very important to remember that everyone is different and special in their own way – both with what helps them sleep at night and with how they feel/look/need/etc.

I really don’t want you to think that anyone is ganging up against you because I truly do appreciate this effort because we need more caring people to promote self-love but I wanted to help you see why this might be construed as more harmful than good in hopes of helping your future posts be even better.

Bright Blessings,

Sakura Blossom
