Help me rhyme? (Updating a book blessing.)

Post by Siona »

This might be a bit of a strange request - hope I stuck it in the right forum...
I've been using the same book blessing in my grimoires/journals/etc. since the start of my practice many years ago, but it could use a bit of an update at this point. It begins with...

Hearken as the Witch's Word
calls the Lady and the Lord

My path no longer has a Lady and a Lord, I've long since moved away from that structure. I did think about simply leaving it for tradition's sake, and might still do that, but would also like to think about other options. I considered ladies and lords, but I kind of like to keep my language more, erm, gender neutral I guess? (Though I have a separate deity blessing, so it doesn't even have to include that concept!) Also, word and lords doesn't rhyme. Neither does word and lord, really, and that's bothered me for a while. The thing is, the rest of the blessing rhymes well! I don't write in rhyme, I'm very bad at it, but I'd like to keep the flow of the rest of the blessing. I'd like to keep 'hearken as the witch's...' line fairly intact, but can't think of what would make sense for the next line with that? Maybe replacing word with prayer, song, chant, call...? But the next line still leaves me stumped. Anyone want to help me brainstorm up something?

Here's the full blessing, if it helps, or just if anyone is curious or looking for a book blessing in general.

Hearken as the Witch's Word
calls the Lady and the Lord
Moon above and Earth below
sky's cool blue and sun's hot glow,
in this right and ready hour,
Fill these pages with thy power.
May no unprepared eye see
the secrets which entrusted be
to I who walk this hidden road
to find the Hearthstone's calm abode.
Guardians* from the four directions,
hear me and lend thy protection:
may these truths of Earth and Skies
shielded be from prying eyes.
But to the Witches whose map this be
may the way be plain to see;
and, through all the coming Ages
may we find home in these pages
So Mote it be!
(Jack Veasey)
((*replaced with spirits in my version.))

"magic pot to now be stirred' …? :D ?

I altered a couple other lines for your consideration, hope you don't mind.

"made only for trained eye to see" I always try to stay away from that word no, you know?

"hear me now and lend protection" I am a fan of thy and thou and all that to wit for art, (being a Rennie) although it doesn't always flow real well. I also tweaked another line perhaps I'm going a bit far with this, but how's,
"enlightened way be plain to see"

I really like this incantation. The original author is Jack Veasey?.
I also really like the spirits instead of guardians that worked well. Could maybe even substitute with "energies".

It sounds pretty good, a classic AABB rhyme scheme ;)

It might be helpful to know more about your worldview. Is it eclectic? Hellenistic? Egyptian? Sabbatic?

Thanks for the ideas, all. :D

Yep. Should have made that a bit clearer, I didn't write the original, pulled it out of a book many, many years ago, where it was in the beginning as a blessing! (Think something of RavenWolf. Was one of the earlier books I had, no longer have it but still use the blessing from it.)

Hedgewitch - so traditional witchcraft, soul flight, spirit work, treading the mill, and the like. (Hellenic also, but following this blessing will be several Orphic hymns, so the the blessing itself can be more witchcraft focused/general, if that makes sense.)

lady is lady luck
lord is "the one who cares most"... neither do need to exist, the ideas such exist as archetypes!

Don't really go in for archetypes in my practice, though. Not in that sense, anyway.

My thought was "Ladies and Lords," just looking at various deities as lords and ladies, but not specifically "The Lord and Lady."
