Door Handle Sachets

Door handle sachets add a sweet, old fashioned touch throughout the
home. Door handle sachets can magickally charge the entrance to each
room. For example: A Protective Sachet may be hung on every door
entering the house: make a small bag, about 3x5 inches, tie with a loop
that will allow it to hang from the door knob. You may get fancy or as
simple as you wish with it, you may also make it to match the decor of
your home. Next, fill it with Bay leaves ( which is wonderful protection
herb ), Angelica ( which is another powerful protection ) powdered Clove
( is helpful to ward against illness entering the home and also acts as
a catalyst to the other herbs ), Benzoin ( is a "power herb" that helps
to focus the other herbs ) Borage ( helps to uncover any dishonest
intentions ) and St. Johnswort which will help reverse any negativity
and also aids in quelling arguments and animosity. Moisten the whole
with Gardenia oil for peace and harmony.

Bride's (Brigid) Bouquet Sachets

Materials:
Imbolc Potpourri (recipe below)
1 Yard White Netting Material
Yellow and Pink 1/8" width Ribbon
Scissors

Potpourri is made with:
1/2 cup dried basil
1/2 cup dried chopped bay leaves,
1 cup dried flowers
1 cup dried Violets
1 cup dried white or pink rosebuds

Blend together in non-metal bowl. Cut netting material into 4"x4" squares. Lay out squares on a flat surface. Place 1 heaping tablespoon of potpourri in the middle of each square. Pull up all the corners to the middle of the potpourri and gather the excess material until potpourri is caught in a "bag". Give bag on twist to the right and tie off with yellow or pink ribbon. Use enough ribbon to make a small bow in the front of the sachet. Tell children how these sachets were exchanged as symbols of good luck and fertility.

Dryer Sachet

Some of you may have made the muslin bags filled with Lavender buds to add to your clothes dryer.
Here's a little different twist. Use raw uncooked rice in the muslin bags. In a bowl add Lavender essential oil to the rice, stir and place in bags. You can also use handkerchiefs or other material. Just be sure to seal or tie it so you don't end up with rice in your dryer.

Note: You can use any other essential oil to match your personal taste in scents of course.

LAVENDER SUMMER POTPOURRI
(all ingredients are dried):

4 cups lavender flowers
1 cup mixed culinary herbs, such as oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary
1/2 cup southernwood
2 cups pink rosebuds and petals
1 cup spearmint
1/4 cup chopped orris root or other fixative mixed with 1 tsp. essential lavender oil

Combine all ingredients and store in a glass jar or zip lock bags for 2 - 4 weeks to allow it to blend. Display in pretty glass or ceramic bowls, or put into sachets or sacks.

Speaking of essential lavender oil, it is the most widely used and versatile healing oil used in aromatherapy. Not only is it very effective, it is also very safe and easy to use. It is the only essential oil generally recommended as safe to apply 'neat' or undiluted to the skin. It is used as a first aid measure to treat minor burns in much the same way aloe gel might be applied. It promotes healing of minor cuts and scrapes, and helps prevent scarring. It is antiseptic and is used in a wide variety of herbal beauty products, and in many insect repellent mixtures. Research has shown it helpful in promoting restful sleep and as an aid for headaches when a drop is massaged into the temple area or onto the back of the neck. The balancing properties of lavender help correct anxiety, nervousness and other emotional problems. Try a drop or two on your pillow at night, in a warm bath, or on a tissue or handkerchief when traveling.

Pumpkin Potpourri

MATERIALS
1 small pumpkin
Leaves from your yard
Berries or nuts from your yard
1 cup orange peel
12 bay leaves
1/4 cup whole cloves
6 cinnamon sticks
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
10 drops cinnamon oil
20 drops spice scented essential oil

DIRECTIONS
Chop the pumpkin into small pieces. Dry out in the oven on low
temperature. Crunch up the leaves and mix all the ingredients in a
large roasting pan. Store in airtight containers and let cure for at
least 6 weeks before using. This is a great way to use up pumpkins
after Samhain -and use the potpourri in the winter months, such as
Thanksgiving, Yule or Christmas.

Pumpkin Spice Simmer

3 cups Calendula
3 cups Windmill Pods, Peach or Orange
2 cups Spina Cristi
1/4 cup Cinnamon Bark, Broken
1/4 cup Orange Peel, Cut
2 Tablespoons Allspice, Whole
2 Tablespoons Cloves, Whole
1 Tablespoon Gingerroot, pieces

Fixative:
1/4 cup Calamus Root, Cut

Oil:
1/4 to 1/2 ounce of Pumpkin Spice
fragrance (or any essential or
fragrance oil you prefer)

Mix all ingredients except the fixative and oils in a container with a lid - again, glass is nice, but not always available. Plastic works, if you keep the oils off of the sides and bottom of the container.) Place the fixative on top of the flowers and spices,
spray or pour the oil on top. Seal and let "set up" a day or two till the oils are absorbed. Then open, mix gently, cover, and repeat every day or two for 10 days to 2 weeks.

One way to give and enjoy this type of simmer without all the messis
to put a small amount into a heat seal tea bag, which you can decorate or stamp with a design before ironing shut. Then place in a pot of simmering water and enjoy!

Spice Potpourri

1 tablespoon McCormick® Anise Seed
5 tablespoons McCormick® Whole Cloves
5 McCormick® Gourmet CollectionTM Whole Nutmeg
2 whole McCormick® Gourmet CollectionTM Vanilla Beans
7 sticks McCormick® Cinnamon Sticks
2 tablespoons McCormick® Whole Allspice
1 cup rock salt

1.Crush anise seed and whole cloves in a mortar. Crack nutmeg with
a hammer. Break or cut vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks into 1/2 to
1/4 inch pieces. Add remaining ingredients, stirring well.
2.Place in tightly covered jar 1 or 2 weeks.

Tip: Spice Potpourri can be used in many ways. Place some of the
mixture in an apothecary jar decorated with a ribbon to make a lovely
gift. Brandy snifters, fancy dishes or baskets also make interesting containers.

Tips for Using Essential Oils Around the House

QUICK TIPS:
Vacuum Cleaner - 2 to 3 drops on the dust collecting bag will spread a nice aroma
Toilet Paper - 2 to 3 drops on inside of roll before putting on the holder
Drawer Scenter - 2 to 3 drops on a cottonball inside drawers, closets, cupboards, etc.
Room Scenter - 4 to 5 drops on a light bulb scent ring Pot-pourri - 5 to 10 drops to revive spent pot pourri
Drains - 2 to 3 drops to help clear musty smells
Eucalyptus has MANY uses....here are a few:
A 2% solution of Eucalyptus oil will kill dust mites
Soak your dishcloths in a bowl with a few drops of Eucalyptus to kill germs
Dissolve the sticky remnants of tape on glass and appliances with Eucalyptus oil, but be careful about getting on wood or varnished surfaces...it can take off the finish.
Sterilize toilet and bathing areas

FOR GLASS AND SURFACE CLEANING
Use an old spray bottle if using plastic (EO’s will "eat" the plastic over time) MIX 16 oz water with 1 tablespoon Everclear alcohol and 1 teaspoon essential oils. I like a mix of tea tree, lemon and lavender (the aroma is great), but there are lots of other options. I like this blend because it goes after bacteria, viruses, fungus, yeast and mold. I also like a blend of Thyme and Lemongrass. Shake often during use.

FOR SINKS, TOILETS AND TUBS
Mix 1 teaspoon essential oil (a degreasing EO like lemon or orange is preferable) with 4 ounces of a good degreasing dishwashing soap (like Dawn) This combination will cut through the soap scum without scratching the porcelain.

GENERAL CLEANING
Make up a mild solution of hot water and a small amount of dish soap in a cleaning bucket. Add 10-20 drops EO. of your choice (this is how I use up the tail ends of bottles of EOs--I especially like pine, lemon, tea tree--or thyme if people have been sick. This is great for kitchens, baseboards, etc. etc.

CARPET CLEANING
You can add a few drops of Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Cinnamon Leaf - or whatever suits your germ killing fancy to the carpet solution. If your not shampooing the carpet, but would like to deodorize it, see the Carpet Deodorizer recipe at the end of this article.

KITCHEN SURFACE
Put Lemon EO in the wash water to kill salmonella. You might also want to add some clove or cinnamon. Wash out the inside of the fridge with a solution of tea tree to kill mold.

VACUUM CLEANERS
Put a couple of drops of essential oil on the outside of the paper vacuum bag. This freshens the air as you vacuum - and if you use a germ killing oil or oils (Lemon, Cinnamon, Tea Tree, Thyme, etc.) you can discourage unwanted science projects from growing in your vacuum cleaner.

THE DUST/MITE/HUMAN CONNECTION
The great majority of household dust is the excrement from dust mites which are eating shed human skin cells (not pretty, I know, but forewarned is forearmed). Some old pillow have been analyzed to be up to 70% (by weight) mite poop. You should wash your pillows regularly (especially if you have allergies), and there is a point when you should throw them away--you'll know!

Basic recipe for potpourri

(Yields one quart)

• 3 Cups pink Rose Petals

• 3 Cups red Rose Petals

• 2 Cups miniature Rosebuds

• 2 Cups Lavender

• 1 Cup Rose Leaves

• 2 Tablespoons powdered Orris Root (fixative) or fiberfix

• 15 Drops Rose oil

1. Spread the fresh Petals on a mesh screen or on a large tray; place them in a warm, dry place, and stir or spread them around a little everyday until they are dry. Put dried Petals in a large glass or metal bowl.

2. Add a fixative such as powdered Orris Root, Oak Moss, cellulose or ground gum benzoin. Use a ratio of two tablespoons of fixative to about four cups of dried material. Add the essential oils and mix with your hands. You can use Sea Salt instead of a fixative, but the scent doesn't last as long. This isn't really a big deal as you can top up the scent with essential oil.

3. Place the mixture in a paper bag and seal the top with clothespegs or clips. Turn the bag over several times to distribute the fixative. Store it away from direct sunlight, and allow the mix to season for four to six weeks. Shake up the bag from time to time.

4. When the potpourri is "seasoned" place in open containers in warm places. Add a few drops of essential oils and mix with your hands from time to time as the fragrance diminishes.

Of course you can use any combination of Flowers, Herbs and Spices. Play around and see what happens. :D

MM,
Cool Info. Question, My friend has a roach problem, is there a EO or EO's for getting rid of roaches? She can't use the sprays because of allergies & she wants to try to do organic things. I have a snake problem, I've heard you can grow lemongrass in your yard & they'll stay away but lack of funds prevents this right now. So my Question is could I use a citrus oil or something to get rid of them? There cottonmouth snakes & black snakes. I'm just not comfortable with snakes at all.

Thanks, Lunacreek

Chop the pumpkin into small pieces. Dry out in the oven on low
temperature. Crunch up the leaves and mix all the ingredients in a
large roasting pan. Store in airtight containers and let cure for at
least 6 weeks before using. This is a great way to use up pumpkins
after Samhain -and use the potpourri in the winter months, such as
Thanksgiving, Yule or Christmas.

Pumpkin Spice Simmer

3 cups Calendula
3 cups Windmill Pods, Peach or Orange
2 cups Spina Cristi
1/4 cup Cinnamon Bark, Broken
1/4 cup Orange Peel, Cut
2 Tablespoons Allspice, Whole
2 Tablespoons Cloves, Whole
1 Tablespoon Gingerroot, pieces

Fixative:
1/4 cup Calamus Root, Cut

Oil:
1/4 to 1/2 ounce of Pumpkin Spice
fragrance (or any essential or
fragrance oil you prefer)

Mix all ingredients except the fixative and oils in a container with a lid - again, glass is nice, but not always available. Plastic works, if you keep the oils off of the sides and bottom of the container.) Place the fixative on top of the flowers and spices,
spray or pour the oil on top. Seal and let "set up" a day or two till the oils are absorbed. Then open, mix gently, cover, and repeat every day or two for 10 days to 2 weeks.

One way to give and enjoy this type of simmer without all the messis
to put a small amount into a heat seal tea bag, which you can decorate or stamp with a design before ironing shut. Then place in a pot of simmering water and enjoy!

Spice Potpourri

1 tablespoon McCormick® Anise Seed
5 tablespoons McCormick® Whole Cloves
5 McCormick® Gourmet CollectionTM Whole Nutmeg
2 whole McCormick® Gourmet CollectionTM Vanilla Beans
7 sticks McCormick® Cinnamon Sticks
2 tablespoons McCormick® Whole Allspice
1 cup rock salt

1.Crush anise seed and whole cloves in a mortar. Crack nutmeg with
a hammer. Break or cut vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks into 1/2 to
1/4 inch pieces. Add remaining ingredients, stirring well.
2.Place in tightly covered jar 1 or 2 weeks.

Tip: Spice Potpourri can be used in many ways. Place some of the

The Book of Potpourri by Penny Black 1989 is very nice for all sorts of potpourri items to make. You can also adapt using magickal correspondences.
