Hi all got a friend who recently acquired a blade and I think it's an athame but don't know what the symbols are on the blade. Anyone enlighten me?

Athame symbols?
Re: Athame symbols?
Hey! Good to see you again, it's been awhile,
I cannot really say they are a pre-formed symbol, but the individual stamp marks looks like a pattern I have seen in leatherwork.
They resemble cressent moons, and the arrangement of 4 on each side of what can be presumed to either be the sun (or maybe earth) would lead me to think they could be representing the 4 holidays of the light half of the year and the 4 holidays on the dark half. The other two markings on either end could be representing polarities, dualities or the God and Goddess.
Kinda cool, it looks pretty long,,,, about 2 feet? Isn't that known as a dirk,? and that can certainly be used as an Athame. Looks like it's seen some use what ever it was used for previously that's for sure. Can you dertermine what the hilt is made of?
My hubs found a large Bowie knife when he was scuba diving, it was pretty corroded, but he made a new handle and now we use it as a hatchet!

Re: Athame symbols?
Thanks for the reply, it has been a long while hasn't it. I posted in other groups as well and most seem to think along the lines you have that it's moon cycles for the seasons but more likely a ordinary weapon with the moon's on to help navigate.

Re: Athame symbols?
I looked up Celtic moon glyphs images and moon phases look similar to the blade’s. Are they also on the hilt?
Re: Athame symbols?
Faded but yes there are some on the hilt as well

Yeah I saw that when I had a Google of the image. Nothing is spot on for what it is but it's defo moon phases and positions for the times of wear for navigation
