Coal is uaually just to burn insense on if its a representation of its earthy carbon properties salt or dirt would readily replace it ... my stand by to burn insense with out a coal is a dish formed from foil held over a large wicked candle ... i some times place tooth picks in the candle (not to deep break to keep it closer to the flame) i heat it first then drop small amounts of loose insense in it stiring to help burn more completely

COne incense and stick incense are the easy, fast, and relatively mess free way to go when it comes to incense. If you do want to use loose herbs, you might want to watch this video: "This Witch's Way: Incense on a Budget" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP2uXOIgCuM

I agree with Stonewolf, salt and dirt are among the easiest representations of earth to obtain and will work just as well.

Taken from my Book of Shadows

III.) Drawing Down the Moon (Invoking the Goddess)

Stand facing your altar, light the Goddess candle and recite
"Silver faced lady with bright starry gown
I ask that your light forever pours down.
Down on the seas that move to your pull
Down on plant leaves that bud green and full
Down on the land bathed in your light
And down on my circle on this sacred night.
Descend lovely Lady, come to my rites
For magick I make on this sacred night."

Ring bell, chime or gong 3 times

IV.) Invoking the God

Continue facing the altar, light the God candle and recite:
"Great God, I ask you, return to this land.
Protect my magick rites with your powerful hands.
Give me strength to do what I may
With the power of the Sunlight
The God of the day
Horned one, I ask you show me the path
Guide me and shepherd me
With your merry laugh
Be with me ever, through all my times
With music and laughter and song full of rhyme"

Ring bell, chime or gong 3 times

V.) Witches' Rune

Recite:
"Darksome night and shining moon
East then South then West then North
Hearken to the Witches' Rune
Here I come to call ye forth

Earth and water, Air and Fire
Wand and pentacle and sword
Work ye unto my desire
Hearken ye unto my word!

Cords and censer, scourge and knife
Powers of the Witches' blade
Waken ye all unto life
Come ye as the charm is made!

Queen of heaven, Queen of hell
Horned hunter of the night
Lend your power unto the spell
And work my will by magick rite!

By all the power of land and sea
By all the might of moon and sun
As I do will so mote it be
Chant the spell and it be done!

Ring bell, chime or gong 3 times

Often times now a days I just say whatever I'm inspired to say but when I was starting out these were great for me. Hopefully they'll resonate with you too! :)
Blessed Be

You could get some money herbs, crush them up, and put them around the wick of your candle. Works like a charm ;) hehe
