Help connecting to God(s)/ess(es)

Ok. So I didn't know where to put this so I'll put it here and if anyone wants to move it, please feel free.

As you all know I'm new to Paganism. I believe that all the Gods exist and to me there is no "correct" path as such but just the path that feels right to us personally.
Before I start onto complicated things, I would love to connect to a/the god(s)/ess(es). Maybe it's just me but I feel that to do things like scry/tarot I kinda need their help/guidance. (Sorry for the vagueness there. I can't find any other way to describe what I'm trying to say. I suppose you could say maybe I'm still a bit confused :? ) Even praying and asking for things, currently I haven't connected to any deities and I just feel like I'm talking to thin air.

How would I go about connecting with God(s)/ess(es)? Currently I light a candle and pray (but I feel like no one is listening). I've tried meditating using a candle but again, I've only just started that and I'm not very good at it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Feather_Rainbow

I'd say... research. Research gods, goddesses, cultures, pantheons, your heritage, and spiritual practices. Finding gods and goddesses you connect to on some level is a good start. Maybe you like strong female figures, or cunning males?
Then I'd suggestion meditating on what you've learned, who you think may be some good deities to get to know.

If you want guidance, you could always light a candle for your angels and ask for their guidance. They aren't deities, but they can offer help until you find good gods.

Here is the charge of the goddess pay attention to all the words they will help to answer your questions. Pay special attention to the line i put in bold text and underline.

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, Who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arionrhod, Brigid, and by many other names:

Whenever you have need of anything, once a month, and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me Who is Queen of all the Wise.

You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that you be free you shall be naked in your rites.

Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My Presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine also is joy on earth.

For My law is love is unto all beings. Mine is the secret that opens the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the cauldron of Cerridwen, that is the holy grail of immortality.

I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before.

Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all things and My love is poured out upon the earth.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust of Whose feet are the hosts of Heaven, whose body encircles the universe:

I Who am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars and the mysteries of the waters,

I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me.

For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.

From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return.

Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.

Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

And you who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.

For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am That which is attained at the end of desire.

Thanks for the advice Black_Tail. Contacting my angels sounds good. How do I call on them? Do I need to say a chant or a certain prayer (sorry but I've never done this before). Does it matter what type of candle I use or do I need to give an offering? What type of help do they give? Do they speak to you or give you signs?

Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks again for your advice,

Thanks Symandinome. I must say I loved that. I thought it was beautiful. But, sorry for the silly question, what does it mean when it says "And you who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without."
It's 11pm here and I'm lying in bed. I don't think my brain's functioning properly. What is the Mystery?

Thanks,
Feather_Rain.

You simply call to them. A good starter is arch angel Michael or Raphael. You really don't need anything just to ask for their help. There are angels for just about everything. Michael is a generally good angel to have around, and Raphael is an angel of healing and creativity. If you have more questions about them, just PM me.

It means the God and Goddess are within you, and you are whole unto yourself. Atleast that's my interpretation. ^^

It probably helps to start with things that you are already interested in. For example, have you been drawn to a particular culture? Do you like Norse, Celtic, Greek or Asian mythology? Have an interest in Egyptology? That is probably the culture you should start with. Then look at the Gods and Goddesses in that culture to see if you have common interests with any. If you get a good book on the different Gods and Goddesses (the Farrars' The Witch's God and the The Witch's Goddess are two books that are helpful) they should list different items which are sacred to a specific God or Goddess. You may find that there is a specific deity that has items sacred to them that you have an affinity for.

If that does not help, try doing a meditation used for finding your spirit guide, but instead ask to meet your God and Goddess. I have to say that I was very lucky in finding my primary Goddess, Hecate.

One of the first books I ever bought on Wicca was Z Budapest's Grandmother of Time. It was a book about various celebrations throughout the year, and in the chapter for November, there was a drawing of Hecate....and she had my face! I was stunned to see that drawing. Over the next several weeks I read everything I could get my hands on about her and found that alot of things that are sacred to her were things that I loved or had a fondness for. For example, Willow trees are sacred to Hecate. I have very fond memories of playing under a willow tree for many years when I was a kid. Garlic is sacred to Hecate and garlic is my favorite herb. Dogs are sacred to Hecate and I have always loved dogs. Even something as simple as the fact that I love trivia and games like Trivial Pursuit can be connected with Hecate. She was often depicted at the corner where 3 roads meet, and was called Hecate Trivia (3 roads)...the word trivia through the years became associate with something that is considered insignigicant.

When you do finally find your God and Goddess, I bet you will find that there are things that you have had in common with them all along, like they have been a part of your life from the beginning, just like I did with Hecate.

They mystery is that the gods have been with you from the beginning. They are a part of you. They always have been and they always will be. Look within yourself and find them before you start looking elsewhere. It is only through the understanding of self and our own personal connection to divinity that we can see them properly in outside things. By knowing our divine self internally then we can know it when we see it in the outside world.

this is not saying that you are a "god". what it is saying is that you are a very real part of god and of nature just as we all are. Acknowledge your own spirit which is your connection to deity and know the nature of your spirit. Knowing the nature of your spirit is talking about knowing yourself on a deeper level than the physical and mundane. Know what key elements are important to you as spiritual being. Know your higher self.

When you know the things that are important to your soul on a deeper level you will know what "types" of deities you will feel a closer connection to.

Dont be confused and think there is a certain way or ritual to learn what your soul wants because that isnt the case

It just means know yourself and what matters to you on a deep level. What parts of you brings you internal peace and a feeling of doing right in the world. What things matter to you so much that when you do them you know that "GOD" would say YES you were right for this.

For me personally, I know that when i am standing up for what is right regardless of the cost, when I am defending those who cannot defend themselves, or when I am being the attentive ear for those that need to be heard, or the guiding voice to those that are lost and when I am doing these things as truely selfless acts; I feel "GOD/ESS" is working through me. That that part of what makes me ME is the God and Goddesss within me. Right now as I am writting this to you I feel the Goddess working through me for you.

When I learned about myself and the things that mattered most to me on that deeper level I learned about "GOD/ESS" I then knew through reading the many myths and stories of various cultures which ones I connect to. You will feel them pulling at you right in that spot where you get "butterlies" when your nervous.

This religion is very different than christianity as this religion is not based upon people telling you what to do and how to believe. This religion is about listening to yourself because your soul knows what is right for you and how to find god all on its own. You have to learn to trust yourself. There is a special part of the GODS that is ONLY FOR YOU. Without you, that piece of "GOD" would not be.

YOU ARE A SPECIAL PERSON, YOU ARE UNIQUE, YOU DO MATTER, AND YOU DO HAVE A PURPOSE!

Find yourself on a deeper level and you will find that "God" was there all along.

To further the above post; which is beautifully written btw, you will hear about the "mystery" through out your path. These are the little things. Feeling the Gods with in us in defiantly one of them (and really all mysteries lead back to this idea).

I beseech you to take a walk. Any where really, in a city filled with the bustle of humans, cars passing by, chattering, or in a dessert, calm, desolate, never ending, or a forest, full of life unseen, the smells of animals, leaves feeding off the sun. All of these lead you to the Mystery. The beauty in all life and death. The beauty of living within the cycle of all things. Finding each in their own time and place, never ending, no known beginning, just the "is". Past and future mean nothing without human context. There is only the moment, take it and let it fill you.

As for finding your Gods, you are really just trying to find a name for them that you can relate to. The Gods never leave you, they are you and you are them. Just like a child is their parents and the parents them. The Gods only differ from us in the way that they do not fall subject to the "sins" of humanity because they know these "sins" are a part of the cycle so thus nothing is "bad" it just is.

Look to your ancestors, look to who you want to be. Sit and think; meditate and think of a Letter. Then another letter until you find that you have a word. From this word look into names that are related.

And as always Good Luck. Finding the name is a journey within it's self. For me, I chose the names of the Gods of my country. While that sounds easy it came with the acceptance of who I am. I am the earth, I am the cold, I am the Caucasus mountains, I am the tundra and the taiga, I am Russia and Russia is me. No matter where I go.

Whoa, everyone is writing so gorgeous! :D Very amazing.
But yes, I agree with all of you. So many wonderful & fabulous ideas!
The way I started was researching them, as well as just reading books upon books on the beautiful Goddesses. And yes theses God/ Goddesses have always been apart of you, walked with you, been through your pain as well as you happiness. Just get to know the Gods/Goddesses and then you will find peace and the ones you would like to connect with and others you may choose not too.
Blessed be. <3
