Sun, Moon, Rising?

Post by IsaacIcarus »

Hi! I have a question about what these things mean. Sun sign, moon sign, rising sign? I was born on October 11, 1995 at 4:12 pm. From what I've been able to find, that makes my sun sign Libra, my moon sign Taurus, and my rising sign Aquarius. What does this mean? It seems like when most people ask what your sign is, they mean sun sign. But I'm not like a Libra at all, as far as I can tell. Of the three, Aquarius seems to be the most similar. My question is, how are the sun, moon, and rising signs supposed to relate to each other? I know next to nothing about astrology but I think its interesting. Many thanks to anybody who can explain. :)

I don't know much about it either- astrology has never been a forte of mine. My limited knowledge is this:
Sun: usually what you are more familiar with and dictates your personality in normal day to day situations.
Moon: personality traits that only really appear when you are extremely emotional- incredibly happy, sad, angry, and so on.
Rising: often related to your "higher self," and what may be in your future.

I know this is an extremely simplified answer, but like I said, I'm not that great with astrology. Hope this helps a little and let us know if you find out any more information on it :)

The sun represents your conscious mind. Your sun sign indicates your primary mode of consciousness, the basic way in which you experience waking life.

Your moon sign represents the unconscious. It indicates aspects of yourself that are fundamental, but that you may not be aware of. This is is also reflected in your dream life, and other altered states of consciousness, your presence on the astral plane, etc.

Your ascendent (rising) sign represents the manner in which your consciousness is expressed. It is your form. Outward personality, idiosyncratic mannerisms, etc are discernible through your rising sign. It is how others perceive you, to the extent that it can often indicate what you actually physically look like. The ascendent is often viewed as indicating your more "superficial" traits, although other schools of thought view it as being the most fundamental component of your chart, as it is the best indicator of your day-to-day personality. Another way I've heard it put is that your sun will show what it is you desire, whereas your ascendent shows how you go about getting what you desire.

Short of examining someone's full chart, I find that the sun, moon, and rising combined are the best way to get a sense of a person's personality. It's the bare minimum you need to make an assessment of someone astrologically.

Hope that was helpful. I'm by no means an expert on astrology, so to those more knowledgable than I, forgive me if I misspoke on any matter.

Ah, thank you Yex! That's a lot of really good information and the whole thing makes much more sense to me now. Makes me wonder why people usually only talk about sun signs.

I'd imagine that it has a lot to do with the commercialization of astrology, packaged in such a way as to be easily consumed by people with little to no interest in the occult, or even in actual astrology.

Because it's simple to learn your sun sign and there are only 12 horoscopes that can easily be included in a typical tabloid or woman's magazine.
Most people don't know that other signs exist.

I second the vote for astro.com. It is a good site with lots of information.
I also second Yax's response.

There is a long tradition of the Sun being considered the central concern of an astrological chart. He was considered the king of the planets and the condition of the other planets were based on their mutual position (which essentially this boils down to all the planets waxing or waning as they aspect the Sun). It is also very easy to calculate which sign the Sun is in by what time of year it is (as long as you are using tropical astrology). The very symbol itself, the circle with the dot inside, is a symbol of self or the center of the universe. Jung writes a bunch about this if you are into that sort of thing.

I was using astro.com before the online thing became widely avaliable. Very reliable company. :)
The sign ones moon is good to look at. It's like the crossing card in the tarot. At least for me, Sag w/Taurus moon ...Oi. It's like ripping me apart.
