Since last year I have gotten a very sturdy hardcover BOS with lined pages. I have also upgraded to using a Calligraphy feather and pen with proper nibs and ink. For ink I'm using Higgins Calligraphy Waterproof Black Ink.

I used to have a ring binder and I'd print off most pages or just use felt pens.. just recently got a leather bound book and I've used a combination of collage (using printed out text mostly, especially regarding pages that have lots of info!) and usually a fineliner. I use fineliner for writing and drawing and I'm quite attached, picked it up being an illustration student haha :) I'd love to make some inks but it's quite hard to find the right stuff to use where I live :/

I really wanted to use a fountain pen, but every one I tried dried out, clogged, were a pain. At an office supply store I found Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens, black, blue, red, green, purple and turquoise. Write clean and smooth, last ages. Hot diggity dog.

My best BOS looks like an old Bible, leather covered, banged up and two inches thick. It's where I keep records, visions, dream lessons, poems, spells, & interesting odd ball things, but I like to make inexpensive, little pocket sized ones just to keep up my copy skills and for special projects, or single themes. Some I give away.

My books of shadows are very much working journals so I just use a biro, albeit a dedicated one. The paper is the handmade kind as I use recycled sari-bound journals so the paper wouldn't hold up to anything fancy.

I do have a separate, terribly posh book that I (mentally) call my grimoire; which is reserved for recording spells and formulas that seriously work for me. That one's written with a quill and dragon's blood ink. The ink definitely isn't archival quality but I love the way it's faded from blood red to a rich sepia over time. That reminds me, I really need some more dragon's blood ink. If I can find a bottle of really good quality red ink I'll probably make my dragon's blood ink using that as a base next time.

Same, but in addition to the text being in black, Im using red, green, blue and yellow to give my pages some life.
I am rewriting many things to include Dropcaps and Borders

Something like this:

Currently, I am teaching myself to make my own paper from wood pulp. My intention for this year is to have spells and rituals that are written on papers made of corresponding wood pulp, ie apple wood pulp paper for love, bamboo or buckeye for luck, etc etc.

Both for my writing in my BoS and on my spellpaper (nothing fancy, just sticky notes) I use red ink. Both papers are light yellow and and the way the red ink looks, makes me feel really witchy.

I must be really strange. I actually dry out the leaves of my oak tree, grind them into dust, mix them with a bit of water, some distilled white vinegar, and a teaspoon of salt.I then mix pretty thoroughly, and in essence make my own ink, which I then call upon the spirits of nature to imbue with a bit of extra magick. I do this so that when I record my spell research, the pages have a level of energy in them that helps if I ever want to repeat a spell process. I also use a quill pen. I might be a bit too traditional I suppose.

I want to learn to write with jar ink and quill, I was lucky enough to find
a man-made ''quill'' and a bottle of silver ink and one of gold rather cheap
I couldn't pass it up. Some day, when its just me so I don't have to worry
about having it picked up...
I have directions on how to make paper with okra on a disk BOS...
Sounds easy to make, it just takes a while to cook down the okra,
maybe a small batch to see at first ?
I'll look it up if anyone is interested...?

I don't use any special paper or ink as I tend to print stuff off/write stuff down on Microsoft word to then be put into my folder of shadows. I do have a note book which I also use for personal thoughts and recording stuff in ie spells and rituals.

I like that this thread got pulled back up- I love the idea of using a quill and ink, but papermate does the trick for me just fine.

I have recently got some dip ink thru amazon, it's walnut shell based-
the ink is brownish in color and made in the USA. I did my first practice
run with the ink as a letter to grand-daughter-the one in the Army. Boy
the ink can be messy especially when my mind goes faster than the hand !
It dries quick unless I forget and leave quill on paper :? The color is dark
enough, I like it cause it's not the common black or blue ink and it came
in 3oz jar ! I also bought some paper just for my BOSs-I have 3 3-ring binders
One for magickal workings I've done, and spells collected that I want to do.
Another one just for herbs and stones info, and combinations that work
for me. The 3rd one is general info. I love them zip-up binders-lots of pockets !
And one wooden covered one for Hekate and Lilith info, and dedication I did.
I dug out a package I'd gotten awhile ago, it has a plastic handled quill
and silver and gold ink. I was thankful the ink was still good...
I'd found some 3-ring binder plastic page holders that also had black
papers. The gold ink will look good on them as chapter separators...
I need more practice with the dip ink before I use the special paper !

I just like to use a regular black ball point pen. Always loved the feel of a page after being written on with a basic ballpoint. Makes the pages all crinkly!
Blessed be
