It's normal to catch the emotions of people close to you to a degree. That's a normal empathetic reaction most people have. Some people are highly sensible some are unsensible. It's up to you to decide if you aren't normal.

Vivid dreams aren't neccessary for lucid dreams, actually getting lucid can help you get dreams more realisitc. Did you ever tried to just say to yourself several times over the day that you are going lucid? Rality checks never worked good for me, only in nightmares, just deciding was best for me.
