The original Witch Dungeon stood 100 yards from this spot. The beam you
see here is from the original dungeon.Leaders from almost every
neighboring village invited the Salem girls to their communities to point
out witches, until Salem Dungeon held over 150 people accused of
witchcraft - it could hold no more. All had to pay for their own food and
keep while in the dungeon. Three died of starvation and exposure because
they could not afford food or warm clothing. Relatives of condemned
witches also had to pay the hangman's fee. |
