Many sellers out there reccomands cleansing crystals using salt water.
However, do note that there are natural linings, or natural crack in the stones which is unseen to naked eye and the salt particles could enter it and stuck in there destroying the structure of the crytals.
The shamans that does the minings also informed us that cleansing crystals with salt will take away the energy of the stones and wants us never to use salt to cleanse crystals.

If need to, use rain water or mineral water to clean your crystals.
Smoke from sage leaves will also cleanse the crystals but it will not remove the dirt particles settling on the stones.

There are other crystals believed to clean other crystals too. These are some of the self cleansing crytals : Citrine, Kyanite , Selenite , or a clear quartz cluster. I still do run them through the water to remove the dirt that may settle on it. but take note that selenite dissolves in water.

I will usually place my crystals in dry salt and leave them sitting on a window ledge so they can receive sunlight for 30 days. Then I will remove them and do a one at a time cleaning with running water, the tap barely opened and visualize all of the impurities flowing out of me and the crystal and down the drain. It works for me.

I sat bury them in the dirt under the full/waining moon with the intent that they be clensed by the dark moon. Then when the time arrives, use salt water to clean/cleanse them. I love crystals and can feel their energies if I just become still. The ones I have love the salt water.

I prefer to set mine on either Citrine or Kyanite (depending on which feels right) on my altar. I imagine burying them would be a very effective way to cleanse them as well. I do not cleanse mine in water unless I really feel the need to. Obviously water is not an option with selenite or gypsum.
