Beltane '15
Well, so we tried to celebrate, but were too tired on the eve, and last night was too windy, to start a bonfire. On the day of, I did pick more hawthorn tops for a tincture, so maybe that will have special meaning. The horses are nicely shed out, the grass is growing as lushly as it will for the year, and land is tilled, but should've been planted by now. I think historically, May 1st was about right, and agrees with my climate's ways. It truly feels like winter's darkness is over and most of spring's work is nearly done, and just looking forward to a summer and fall of tending and harvesting. I think most rituals or superstitions can be based on common sense or fact. Our horses would probably not like being driven through the bonfires, but back then for cattle, it did kill the lice that set up in long winter hair. It reminds me of nowadays sending the cows through poles that hold the insecticide dust bag. About now, would be the time to do anything feasible to give hope that those planted crops would thrive. The hawthorns seem to flower like clockwork, near May 1st. This is when everything "feels" most prosperous and the sense of hope and life is strong.
