I found out through research that you should consecrate any new tool. I still live at home and my Mom disapproves of Wicca so I can't yet have an alter or do spells/rituals but I want to, in secret, start a Book of Shadows. Do I have to wait till I can do a consecration ritual for my new journal or can I start my BoS now without my journal being consecrated?

You can hold the book in your hands and silently dedicate it. Also write a dedication inside. Consecration is to dedicate something for a spiritual purpose. The ritual is optional. Use your breath to empower it by blowing on it. Breath is a sacred source of energy. Brush your teeth with a light salt water rinse first, if you like. You can dedicate and empower any working tool this way.
