Creating my own tarot deck?

There are some really, exceptionally love decks out there that call my name... but I find myself in a bit of a situation when those decks are $50 or higher in price, and I am just a beginner. I love thicker material cards, and cards that are rather large in size, larger than the normal playing cards.

I have been contemplating for a few days now, and went to http://www.learntarot.com to get a grasp on the cards. I also plan to do the lessons that are on that site.

Would it be a good idea to make a deck that I connect with? A deck that I made that has had my energy in it from the very start?

I learned that each suit has a corresponding element, and color. Swords for air, and they could be light blue, yellow or white. Cups for water, and that would be a rich shade of blue. Pentacles for earth, and green to represent that. Wands for fire, and it would be red. Would it be bad to have the backs of the suits have different designs, or do the backs of the cards have to match? An example would be a fiery design on back of the wand cards, and then a cracked earth design for the back of the pentacle cards.

This deck would be solely to do readings for myself in various ways.

Why not. It could be an ever-evolving project, changing in new ways over the years as you see fit. Your readings would be uniquely yours.

My vote is that if it's your art, you would make the rules on such things. However, the nice thing about staying within established parameters (maybe not rigidly but loosely at least) is that it makes it easy for you to be conversant in such symbology with regard to your readings. In other words, you wouldn't have to "translate" between your way and an established way when talking to someone else about them. I don't know, I just say that because that's something I came up against when I wanted to use my own correspondences, rather than what was already acceptable in Western culture. I got tired of translating, so I acquiesced to mainstream (for the most part  ).

You could also start a thread in this forum and give the deck a test run, if ever you feel like it: http://everythingunderthemoon.net/forum/forum177.html

And if you'd like to share your work here as you develop the deck, I think folks here would enjoy answer questions, or helping you get through any stuck points you might encounter, etc. We are from differing paths, so you'll probably get a chorus of varying responses.

Good luck!

I had a deck I made myself. Bu only the Major arcana. It took a while, but to be fair, I had a fantastic connection to the deck. Unfortunately the materials I used were not of good quality and the cards wore off.

Anyway, my point is, yes, it's a great idea to create your own tools and as Kassandra said, it's your art, you can be as creative as you wish.
Good luck and please share your deck with us when finished.

I have made a few decks, one deck had double sided cards, different on each side.
What I would do to test your backs is to shuffle a normal deck card facing upwards and see how it affects your process. You may find that it is ok or you may be distracted and divert from the flow.

But, if you are going to make a tarot deck then you should really learn the cards properly and the way they all interact and keep to the traditional format or they won't be tarot cards, they will be an oracle instead, but I am a tarot snob like that lol, sorry.

Your views and opinions are very much appreciated. Thank you muchly! I think as a beginner in tarot reading, it may be better to get an established deck so I can get the hang of things before charging off to make my own deck.

I still adore the idea of creating my own, and I think I'll set a goal to a card every one or two days starting with the major arcana, and then each suit once I poke my curiousity around with a deck that wasn't crafted by my hands.

Excellent idea, pondering on this for a while too. But I guess you have to go deeper for the search of associations. For instance, meditate on... The Star. What are the deepest associations you have with this card, what deep within makes you feel like this card? Then pick the image that corresponds to that feeling. For instance, for me the feeling of guiding light, hope and everything associated with this card is Pleiades cluster, so in my deck I'd pick the imagery of Pleiades for The Star. In reverse it'd resonate very very deeply... The Sun? Huge oak, bright sun, grass, girl sitting near the oak and playing flute or something similar... the associations I get from listening to "mummer's dance" song. Just an example. And the same deep research for all of the cards.

It'll be my first time using tarot cards so I'm not sure what I'm missing out on just yet but the length of time I have to wait is still so much. It's worth it though to me, I'll be taking these next couple weeks to continue grounding myself, meditate, and what have you!

I purchased the Idiosyncradeck tarot deck from etsy. Funny story is that I had planned on buying a different deck, and I had favorited said deck so I could place my order later. When I pulled etsy back up, the Idiosyncradeck deck appeared on the list of what etsy recommended based on my favorites. I felt as much as a connection as I could through the limited photos available, and the colors of the Idio spoke to me more than the black and white of the original deck I fell in love with. So, I went ahead and bought it, but it's a pre-order so they won't be shipped out until around February 20th.

Yeah, sure! I think it's a fairly new deck, but I'm not completely sure.
