Vivid and lucid dreams, simple how tos?

I know theres a simple way to get more vivid dreams and more dream frequency/recall. Its simply keeping a dream journal. But I have noticed it was no help whatsoever to lucid dream.
I would call the dream journal a passive practice. On onlien nearly all of the lucid dream tips are active rather than passive, like they want you to relax and fall asleep using an egg timer set ofr certain amounts of minutes and such like a dream hacker almost, Im not comfortable with that because it means I wouldnt get much sleep, I would need to buy things, and such.
I would rather know a passive action for improving lucid dream occurances. I have stopped my dream journal, which prolly isn't a grand idea though, but I read that writing on a notecard am I dreaming? on it and drawing a symbol on the other side, then pulling it out frequently throughout the day is supposed to help because if you pull it out into a dream the symbol will change then you knwo you are dreaming, or you read the question and it makes you notice you are dreaming, but Im just starting this out.
Do any of you know any passive activities for getting a lucid dream to occur?
