i have always been wondering how can someone tell if a gem is real or glass.
for example i got a clear quartz rough crystal and it looks like glass. i touch itand feel the bees (tingling feeling in the stomach like bees buzzling). well? i am sure lots of people are wondering the same thing.

i must admit i do wonder as well sometimes. my friend told if you scratch it on a wall and the scratches are white on the stone then it's a fake. but i do get confused about it too.

Usually you can feel the energy of them when held in your hands. Quartz are very popular crystals and are made of silicon. Glass is also made of silica. The energy and form will indicate to whether its a true. Some are double terminate, single, tumbled, carved. It all depends. Sellers can mislead people into thinking what you are buying is the 'real deal'. Quartz and other stones are cheap and if creating a fake one, the production cost would be the same or more. Why create a fake. Some stones look the same but they aren't the same. I bought a lemurian and atlantean crystal. they are both different. lemurian have a distinct look to them. They are strong crystals.
Your best bet is to take a photo of it and send it to a mineralogist or some expert.

It's generally not very easy in some cases to identify the fake ones,at least it isn't if you're not sure you can easily feel the energy in real crystals. You generally won't find uncut and unprocessed fake crystals, the fake ones are the ones they sell for jewellery. Try to buy crystals from a certain shop that you trust, so that you will have some definitely real crystals to compare them the ones of the same kind you are looking into buying(for example if you intent to buy pink quartz crystals study the one you already have,so that you'll feel that something is off with the ones you intent to buy if they're fake). Also look online, there are web pages that explain what are the differences between real and fake crystals of different kind,so you can check specifically the ones you are looking into. With experience it will be easier to recognise the real crystals.
Also beware of big quartz crystals, the ones that are a stone cut in half with the quartz inside. The sell them in bright colours, but the colours are not real, they just dye the crystals to make them look spectacular.Only a few of them are actually something more than pure crystal quartz(although you can find some good stones like that with amethyst inside instead of crystal quartz).

I agree with Buttercup. I'd also look for impurities in the stone. Processed glass won't have them. Coloration also will not be uniform in a natural crystal but it will in a processed one.

By uniform I mean the same throughout. Take my piece of Fluorite for instance:

Or my stone of Blue Aragonite:

You can see in both of these that the coloring is not the same in all parts of the stones.

With the Clear Quartz if you use a pocket knife (as its safer) and try to cut through the Qurtz, If it chips or you manage to cut through it then its fake. newangel
