Enchant a ring for protection?

I just bought a sterling silver ring that features a simple skull. It's the only ring I've ever bought. I was prompted to buy it in a metaphysical shop while purchasing a salt crystal lamp. It fits my index finger perfectly. I want to enchant it to enhance psychic awareness and psychic protection. Is the following process suitable for this intention?

Bury ring in a bowl of himalayan pink salt.
Place dominant hand's fingers in bowl and imagine ring being energetically cleansed, or neutralized.
Remove ring from bowl and splash it with some consecrated water.
Smudge ring with loose incense (probably white sage or mugwort).
Pass ring through the flame of a consecrated candle.

During each step I would speak some simple words to clearly state my intention, such as:
"I purify you with earth!"
"I purify you with water!"
...etcetera

The process you described above will only cleanse/purify the ring. It is definitely going to be a strong cleansing, as you're going to cleanse it with all four elements. But after you do that you also need to consecrate it to serve your purpose.
You probably know this but I'm going to mention anyway: What cleansing does is stripping the object of any kinds of energies so when you cleanse it it becomes kind of "hollow" energetically. By consecrating the object you "inject" the energy of your intention into it.

I would probably skip the consecrated water and candle, but that's me. Consecrated things just don't have a good connotation for me. Too much like the Catholic Church. But if you have no negative feelings about such things then they should be fine for you. Over all, I think it's a very good ritual.

Thank you for the informative response. I actually thought this whole process would both cleanse and consecrate the object, but I knew something to be missing. I suppose that would be the consecration. That's where I draw a blank.

Do you know any methods of consecration, simple or not so simple? I'm quite stocked up on books about magickal practices and metaphysics, many of which I have yet to finish reading... So even if you could point me in a direction of study, I would be quite grateful.

EDIT: if, after cleansing, I imbue the ring with the energies of the heavens (stars, planets, sun, moon) and the earth, would that be a suitable consecration rite?

The only reason I would use consecrated supplies is that I like to cover any and all bases when doing spell work. The consecration of the water and candle would kind of be like a safety net for me, should anything go wrong. I suppose it's sort of like an irrational fear of not being in control of the situation-- I often rely upon external forces to protect me when things get hot. I hope to soon rise above it though. Your response is clarifying, so I thank you! :)

Rituals are very individual, and it's important for you to maintain your comfort level.

Yes that is true. I would not want to feel insecure during a ritual, lose focus, and welcome any possibility of negative interference.

Ahh, interesting point here, SnowCat.
Just to make things clear: Even though the word "consecrating" might lead to some christian-related connotations for some people, it is not really related to christianity. People from all kinds of traditions used to consecrate their magickal tools before christianity. Consecrating = charging = imbuing with energy/intention. It's all the same. Even anointing is a way of consecrating. But if you don't like the word you can just replace it with "charging" or whatever feels more comfortable to you ;)

As for methods of consecration... You mentioned that you want the ring to enhance psychic awareness and psychic protection so you need to keep that in mind while chosing the method. Of course it is totally okay to imbue your ring with celestial energies if that's what speaks to you the most. But don't just throw them all in there, pick the ones that for you personally resonate with the idea of awareness and protection. Personally I'd probably choose Saturn as it's often associated with toughness and gaining wisdom, but again - you need to pick what resonates with you :)
How I would consecrate - or actually did consecrate one of my rings in the past?
I'm all about simplicity and intuition. My way of cleansing the ring was simpler than yours - I cleansed it only with the Fire as I feel a strong connection with that element. Then, when it was cleansed I sat in a half-lotus pose, got myself into a meditative state of mind, drew the energies from the Universe and enriched them with my intention. Then I imbued them into my ring. That's just one, super simple way of doing it.

When I visualized your ring and your intention here's what came to my mind (that's of course what I would personally do, so it's just an idea/suggestion):
You can perform the cleansing the way you described it above, using all four elements. Then, when you're done, you could use a surface (can be a piece of paper) with astrological signs of the planets/asteroids/stars painted on and place the ring in the middle. If you're all about doing your work safely you can mark a circle around you and the ring or just around the ring and then you can start chanelling the energy of the celestial bodies into the ring. It can be done simply with visualization but you can also look for or write your own invocation of the celestial elements to imbue them into your ring. You can include your intention in the invocation as well if you feel like it. Then, when you feel it is fulfilled you can solemnly put the ring on your finger and feel the power flow! :flyingwitch:
That's how I would approach it but remember that what matters the most is your own vision and your comfort.
Good luck!

Since consecrate has Catholic overtones for me, I would use the term prepare or infuse.

Thanks so much! I am just currently working on a Saturnine Consecration ritual and I believe I shall yield a decent mystic artifact in due time! :D

This is a very interesting ritual, Cruel Rotus, and similar to what I did to bless my pentacle necklace I wear for protection. (: Very nice, and I think it will work well! Everyone has their own way of doing things, so as long as you put your belief into it, that it works, then it will! There is no right or wrong way to do anything. (:

What I did with mine was I put it in water that I purified and blessed, then ran it through smoke while envisioning it radiating white light. I am pretty sure I did more, but I can't remember the exact steps. Haha.
