I've seen many different opinions on this question & would be interested to see what you have to say.

Firstly, do you ALWAYS have to cast a circle? Secondly, if you don't always cast a circle how do you decide when you do or don't? And, finally when you do cast a circle do you just call the quarters generally or do you call on something more specific for you 4 points?

I never cast a circle, haven't since I was Wiccan many years ago, it's just not a part of my practice's ritual structure.

I cast circles every once in a while and when I do, it's not really a Wiccan circle, but more of a cleansed space I need for a certain ritual. As for how do I decide, I usually cast a circle when I do protection rituals.
I know Wiccans cast a circle for protection and it's a good thing, especially when you are new to the craft, it focuses your energy too. But if you don't feel you need a circle, I would say it's not really a necessity.

Thank you both. I've been out of practice for awhile & have noticed that some of the newer things I've been reading don't always call for it & was wondering what the change was about or if it was the individual writers' preference.

Depends on if I am feeling lazy or not aha. No, but seriously, I usually cast a circle when I am doing an actual spell as opposed to a ritual, but sometimes I cast a circle when I am doing a ritual and not during a spell, but I do not think it is vital to cast a circle for a spell to work. When I was beginning, I did not know what casting a circle meant so I just did not do it and I do not think it affected my spells or rituals in any way; in any case, you do not have to cast spells when you deem it unnecessary and if you forget, it is not the end of the world... My great gramma on my mother's side (the only great grandparent I ever remember meeting) was a German immigrant. So the language (tho I don't know much of it) is close to my heart. I've considered teaching myself.

I cast during ritual, but I don't always cast during spell work.
However, if I am doing spell work it is in a clean working space that is blessed and positive

Thanks smogie...it definitely seems like circle casting is all about personal preference

I definitely think it is something worth learning, me and one of my best friends speak in German it is quite fun especially when nobody understand what you are saying, it is quite funny. Also it is quite close to English - I find it easier than French.

Thanks for sharing. I kinda of agree actually the more I think about it. I feel like it uses energy that could be used elsewhere.

I cast circles...sometimes. For just worship/prayer nah.. but any invoking work, or "major" working I might, depending on what it is for. Also where I am makes a difference... For example, if I were to do any work outside in my yard, yes that circle is being cast! (I live in a very scary negative vortex hole of sorts...) But the only reason I see to cast one is to keep out what you don't want to enter, or keep in what you want to focus/contain. BTW Ich spreche Deutsch sehr gut (I agree it is nice to have a second language when you don't want others to know what you are saying.)
