The answer to this depends upon the seeker. Have you read our Gods/Goddesses section of the forum? This is a pretty common question, so you might find your answer there.

Hello! I would suggest reading everything you can by Scott Cunningham. When you're finished, take a walk and talk to nature.

What are your interests? What drew you to Wicca? What are hoping to learn or accomplish? Answer these questions, then research what deities correspond to them. You will probably find more than one, but it would narrow the field.

This! My patron Goddess came to me. It took a few meditation sessions until she fully let me know who she was.
Same thing with my magical name. Took a while to be revealed

Im a strong beleiver too that they choose you.

I was recently drawn to two deities that I didnt have any interest in. I kept getting signs from them. Upon further research and connection through dreams/meditation I realize that they are acutally perfect for me.

Just be open to communication from any, and they will contact.

Hi there. Welcome to the forum. I would suggest you start by posting an introduction in the introduction forum if you haven't already. That will give you a place to at least say hello and meet other people of all experience levels.

You want to learn about Wicca huh? Thats great. I have a few questions for you though.

1: What do you believe and or understand Wicca to be?

2: What drew you to Wicca?

3: Are you looking for a religion specifically or are you more interested in a personal spiritual path?

4: What are your current beliefs regarding deities?

5: What if any is your current view on the afterlife?

6: What is magic to you?

7: What research have you done up to this point (what books, websites, magazines, ect have you read)?

There are many Gods and Goddesses out there. Wicca actually honors a specific God and Goddess. That Goddess is the Lady of the Isles and the God is the Lord of the isles. The Goddess is trifold in nature and the God two fold in nature.

This is true. Not everyone who starts out seeking Wicca is meant to follow the Wiccan path. Some may be destined to follow another witch path with other Gods. Some may even find that they are drawn to just work with Goddess energy and or God energy. Some may even find that they don't feel called to be of service to any specific deities but would be more suted spiritually to work with the forces and individual spirits of nature rather than specific deities. Don't let yourself be limited to working with Gods and Goddesses.

It's probably a common question because so few people are raised in Pagan Households so becoming polytheistic is an adjustment.

This is also true. For years I thought I was called to work with Greek deities. They were the first non Christian Gods I ever knew anything about. So I started off with those Gods being the focus of my worship and practice. A few years later I had dreams of the Norse Gods sort of looking for me. I started looking into their paths and practices and I found that was where I ultimately belonged. I still have a relationship with Pan and Selene as well as Poseidon. I just work with a different crowd now.

In regards to Wicca Cunningham wrote two books. I do agree that those books are great for starting out. The first book Wicca for the Solitary Practioner even comes with the BOS or Book of Shadows for the solitary tradition or style he created. This provides a great resource for many beginners. There are other authors out there who have books that are just as useful. However it is important to note that the tradition no longer calls itself Wiccan. They simply refer to themselves as Standing Stone Witchcraft.

Cunningham was initiated into a traditional Wicca coven. However he left shortly after his initiation and never recieved the actual training of Traditional Wicca. So while the fact that he was initiated gave him some credit for training, he never learned the actual Traditional rites of Wicca. He only learned the basic training materials used to give some one an idea or concept of what Wicca entails.

Cunningham wanted to do his own thing and leave it open to solitaries. Cunningham is probably the founder of the Solitary traditions or styles of Wicca. Due to leaving before starting his training that includes the oath bound materials and knowing the names of the God and Goddess he never learned or experienced traditional Wicca mysteries. He never learned their ritual materials or the like. He never even made the rank of High Priest (Second degree).

He did have experiences in the material he was given prior to initiation. He did experience some mysteries and a God and Goddess. This is where the Standing Stone tradition started. This is also where the concept of solitary practices of witchcraft began. Prior to Cunningham there was no solitary version of Wicca. All forms of Wicca were coven based.
