I had the opportunity to visit upstate New York this past week. I was in a small town named Newark.

There is a building that surrounds the original foundation of the house of the fox sisters and it's deemed the birthplace of modern spirituality. The sisters practiced mediumship.

It was just a beautiful site that I wasn't aware of and I just wanted to share!

Nice, yet in your statement above, LadyK13, you were both correct, and incorrect, and it is these type of semantics in phrasing, that can cause problems down the line through time, as has been demonstrated again and again, in what we call history.

This is what I am referring to :

Everything here is fine, *except* for a *most* important point, as is correct on the marker, yet not in your sentence. It is not the birthplace of *spirituality," yet *spiritualism,* known as the umbrella term, under which mediumship may be practiced.

*Spirituality,* is a much different term, and a vast semantic umbrella, covering many,, many traditions and practices, of which spiritualism is a very small category.

You would not believe how many conversations on pagan sites have turned into arguments due to *simple* terminology. We must all be careful with these type of statements, as it is not only those who read this now, or hear it , yet those "who come after,"learning from us and our words online and in public. Let alone those of other religious persuasions who might take offense at *another pagan lie,"as I have heard, or seen posted online.

I thank you for understanding my point in advance, and hope my pointing this out did not offend you. It was nice to see their marker, and I am glad you got to see the site. Did you spend any time alone sitting quietly, trying to make contact with them?

(that would have been a trip...using mediumship to contact those said to start modern spiritualism in the very place they practiced mediumship , *and* making contact, and getting an answer !)

Whoops! You are certainly correct to point out my mistake! Spiritualism is what I meant to type as it's clearly on the stone by the house lol! That's what I get for typing fast and not proof-reading carefully!

I sat by for a very long time and just meditated. I didn't feel direct contact to the sisters, but the place itself feels very intense with positive power and energy.

The sisters publicly admitted to being a hoax.

From their story, it sounds to me that they were cashing in on the demand created by the Civil War to connect with dead loved ones, believe in a higher power, and have fun to distract from the every day turmoil.
