Hey all, I haven't had a lot of experience with this in the past, so I'm curious to get your opinion. My friend asked if I'd be willing to do a house cleansing with her (I'm using this one), and I'm going over tonight. There's something paranormal in her apartment (she lives in an older apartment complex that's a renovated barn from the 1800s) that has been calling to her cats, occasionally sneaking up on her, etc.; it freaked her out a lot, which is why she asked for help. However, she said she didn't get the impression it was malevolent or intended harm, just frustrated.

First, I drew some cards for her, and I found that the spirit (or whatever it is) is indeed not malevolent, but just playful. It's frustrated from being lonely and ignored, and it wants some friendly attention. Because it's kind of childlike, it doesn't understand it was freaking my friend out by sneaking up on her. My cards said that some blessing wouldn't be bad, but the main thing that was needed was for my friend to change their relationship to the spirit. I suggested leaving some offerings for it, like milk and bread, and speaking to it politely. I asked what was the ultimate outcome, and the cards said that if we were to be friendly to the spirit, it would eventually settle down into a pleasant and helpful presence.

This all gives me the general impression that it's a neglected household spirit, and I shouldn't be banishing it, but helping it get some acknowledgement as part of the household. When I go over tonight to do the house blessing, I'm also going to mostly focus on inviting in positive energy. I also bought some bubble blowing solution as well as a playful little offering.

What do you think? I haven't had real experience working with spirits, so I'm curious to get your feedback. Thanks!

The first thing that popped into my head, was give it a sock. I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow as recently. I don't think house spirits are a lot different than house elves in personality. I think your friend could probably have a great relationship with it once they understand each other. The bubbles are probably a good idea.

I agree, a gift (especially a toy if it's more childlike and playful), would be a good way to change the relationship.

I love bubbles myself. I think your approach is intuitive and brilliant. Lighten the atmospheric energies with sun catchers, citrus and selenite. I think colorful marbles in a bowl make a nice offering. I gave a sun catcher to the brownie in my basement and it seems appreciated.

Well, so here's how it went down.

Half of my coven showed up to help cleanse the spirit. At least one member felt that the home didn't have the best energy when we first walked in. We performed the cleansing (there was a procession of 6 of us, each with a different task of chiming, cleansing, saging, etc.), which went fine until we got into the loft. I was the one doing the chanting, and when I got up there, I felt this pressure on my chest, and suddenly I couldn't remember the words I was chanting and my tongue was all tripped up (later, one of my covenmates said she felt the same thing).

Part of my ritual was to incorporate a piece where we went around a circle to say a few words of greeting to the spirit. We asked them to be good neighbors to the people who lived in the home, and not to scare them anymore and that we could all get along. I had brought, per your suggestions, a bowl of marbles, a shell for food offerings, and a few knick-knacks/toys for a little altar (they cleared some space on a bookshelf for it). We also blew some bubbles and played with some streamers with bells on them, for the spirit.

Afterwards, we all noticed that the place felt lighter and clearer, and we said our goodbyes and left.

I went home to do a quick tarot reading, and I was feeling very keyed up, with some pent-up energy. I figured I would go home, have a shower, and eat dinner to ground and center myself. I tried to do a tarot reading before the shower, and something knocked half the cards out of my hands under the couch. I picked up the cards and did a reading, which showed some pretty unpromising results (like this would cause strife and conflict, etc.). Then I realized that I was missing a lot of cards in the deck (they were still under the couch!). I redid the reading, this time with the full deck, and got much better results that seemed to be more in line with my initial reading several days ago. That made me feel better, but it also made me think that I had brought something home with me that was still messing with me -- a bit of that trickster energy. I showered and cleansed myself of that unwanted energy, and that made me feel a lot better. In retrospect, we probably should have saged each other as well before the end of the ritual.

My friend emailed me today to tell me that her boyfriend performed a meditation after we left to see what the results were. He saw not one, but TWO energies upstairs -- a blue one hanging out by the offerings, and a gray one that was following their cat. However, the whole place feels much lighter and clearer than before.

I'm wondering if you had any insights about why there could be more than one energy? It's always possible I misinterpreted things in my initial reading. Part of the ritual also did invite in the energy of Hestia to protect the home, so there's that too. Either way, things seem better now.

Sounds like a good event, even with unanticipated discovery of 2 presences. The 2nd one may only have made itself known because of the contact being made, and will settle down again and coexist quietly as everybody gets accustomed to each other.

The blue one is a person. The gray one is the blue one's cat. Some catnip and cat toys would be appropriate.

the jolly ranchers I have found to have a really long shelf life (they can sit there for a while and never develop mold or anything)

Thanks, y'all, for the suggestions. Hard candy is a great idea. I think the fact that the gray spirit is a cat could make sense as well.

Congratulations on a successful cleansing. Still, be aware It might come back, So be sure to check in with this friend of yours some time just to be safe. Hearth spirits can be temperamental. If whatever angered it before angers it again, it might come back.
