Trouble IDing Some Gems

Postby miachrhys » Sun Apr 15, 2012 10:51 am

Hello everyone.

I am having trouble identifying a few stones. They were purchased when I was new to the Craft and for whatever reason it didn't occur to remember the names or at least make a record of what I purchased. Any help would be greatly appreciated. smileydance

I was thinking the two on the left were petrified wood. The large green one seems like slate but I'm just going on a hunch which could easily be wrong.

The round puck shaped one, does it have a sheen on the inside? (Kinda like the aurora?) If so, that will be labradorite.
The shiny sharp edged black one is obsidian.
The ones at the end are petrified wood.
The green one is either green aventurine or moss agate.

Thats all that I can help with. I hope it helped some

Ravencry,

Thank You so much! You were a wonderfull help and I really appreciate it. Yes, the round puck is labradorite. I saw a video by phanie12 just after I posted and she had one very similar although much larger. Do you know the difference between jet and obsidian, just for my own future reference?

Thanks again.

Actually I used this new thing that I heard about to find out the difference. You have probably heard of this thing called "Google" too. ;)

Jet, is a "gemmy" variety of Lignite (a lightweight type of Coal) which retains the structure of the original wood. Coal is defined as, "A sedimentary rock of organic origin consisting predominantly of carbonized plant remains." Jet normally has a matte like finish (flat, not shiny).

Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass. It is also classified as a rock, not a mineral and is basically formed by grain like particles of super heated Silica. These particles are what are left over after the volcanic eruption has spewed out all the other elements, water, etc As the lava cools, so does this mix of silicas. This quick cooling process leads to what we know as Obsidian. Obsidian is heavier than Jet, it polishes to a really fine shine if tumbled and can be semi-translucent to opaque.

Thanks everyone! So far we've figured them all out except the top right. Sorry for the poor picture quality...it would have been a lot easier to put names to them if the lighting were improved.
