Today I learned...

Postby Shireside » Mon Aug 28, 2017 10:07 am

Every days a school day, right? I figured I'd start this thread as a place folks can dump the random and interesting bits of knowledge they stumble upon in the regular day-to-day. No matter who or where you are, this world is a wondrous miracle. What did you learn?

Starting off, I just heard that the English word 'bear' comes from an ancient Germanic word for the color brown. As word magic was common in the old world, it is believed that people would call dangerous animals by descriptive words rather than their proper name, as using the name might draw the beast towards you.

Follow on to not calling something by naming it. In USA, until approximately 1840, the populace would not say The D&vil. Old scratch is my favorite name they came up with. Sounds like long untreated jock itch.

The 'h' in the name for one of our most ancient ancestors, the Neanderthals, is silent in the words most correct pronunciation. As an aside, these ancient people are awfully fascinating folks...I keep rerouting to articles on the so-called cavemen lately.

Though North Korea is still certainly a hot mess to say the least, it's people--or more likely, the upper class--aren't quite as utterly closed off from the outside world as I previously thought. Students can even take advantage of study abroad opportunities, and North Korean workers are contracted to jobs outside of the nation on the reg.

From the counter intelligence angle, some few of the students are people who have planned to try to defect. A bunch of the other people are double agent types. It then gets even more involved. Who is watching the watchers. They may be playing a deep game of looking like defectors. That may then get complicated with double think. Are they double agents? Triple agents. Are they then trying to infiltrate the group that has already gotten away with defecting. Then double thinking the double think. Then your head starts to hurt as you go farther down the rabbit hole.

One thing I really like is when you learn a new word,
then that day...or within the week it comes up in conversation or in the news or a book :fairy:

One thing I get reminded of often is stand back, keep your hands off the controls. Trust the process.

Don't forget the corpus callosum which regulates the communication between the brain hemispheres and the medulla oblongata which joins the brain to the spinal column.

On the topic of brains... Swear words are processed in a totally different area from language, and instead come from the same seat as our emotional response and memory. So essentially, dropping the F-bomb when you stub your toe is no less natural than saying 'uh' and 'um' when you're working out a sentence.

If anyone here has played the game Skyrim, a character named Ragnar the Red might be familiar from a commonly played song in taverns. With a name too similar for coincidence, Ragnar Redbeard was a real life author of a work titled Might is Right, which is believed to be a big inspiration to the point of almost plagiarism for Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible.

Just very cool when you consider his important role as a grail Knight in the stories ... his name seems to almost foreshadow his role.
