Significators

Postby Lover of War » Sat Jan 04, 2014 9:44 am

Has anybody ever thought about using deities as a way to choose the significator card for a querent? Like for an example; in my deck (Wizards Tarot) The Magician corresponds with Mercury/ Hermes. So if the person is say a traveler, then maybe u could use it as the significator. Wat is everybody's thoughts on this?

Could you elaborate a little more on your thoughts about how that would work?

I've never considered the idea, but it's intriguing to me.

Hmm....u could choose the card that corresponds to a deity, and think about the deity. Their role in their pantheon, their personality, their goals. Did that help explain any bit at all? Its apparently hard to really describe it. lol

The significator is the card that represents you, so if you are resonating with that energy then that is your card. I haven't corresponded much of the deck with deities ever before. What other cards would be which Gods? or Goddesses?
Ok I am thinking about this:
0 Fool=?
1 the Magician=Hermes
2 the High Priestess= ?
3 the Empress= a fertility Goddess? any...
4 the Emperor= the Dagda? Crenunnos?
5 the Hierophant=?
6 the Lovers=???
7 the Chariot=?
8 Strength= Diana?
9 the Hermit= Hern? Crennunos?
10
11
12 the Hanged Man= Odin?
ok I'm gonna stop for now, Am having little luck trying to think of one for each...maybe someone else has thoughts on this.

Ooh, interesting! My first thought, though, is does the correspondence depend on the deck you're using, since some don't use the traditional suits at all?

Let me see, let me see...

For me personally, I might see associate the cards this way:

0 Fool= Pan (I associate him with this card mostly based on the mythology, but I feel it's apt)
1 the Magician= Loki or Hermes (Quick wit and quick hands, kind of sly, but wise)
2 the High Priestess= Frija (encourages you to look within for clarity and insight)
3 the Empress= Demeter, Freya or Cerridwen (connection with femininity, fertility, and the earth)
4 the Emperor= Dionysus or the Dagda (not sure why I picked these two for this, but it was my gut impression, so I'll go with it)
5 the Hierophant= Osiris (again, gut impression)
6 the Lovers= Aphrodite and Hephaestus (I just see them in this card; strong, steady relationship, loving despite difficulties)
7 the Chariot= Artemis or Apollo (maybe Poseidon)
8 Strength= the Morrigan (self-explanatory, haha :) )
9 the Hermit= Tyr or Odin (wisdom, study, search for knowledge)
10 the Wheel of Fortune= Tyche (she's the first deity that comes to mind for me here)
11 Justice= Athena, Tyr, of Freya
12 the Hanged Man= Odin (no questions there, haha)
13 Death= Hecate, Arawn, Kali or Hel (I think the listed deities could be numerous and highly variable, depending on circumstances)
14 Temperance= Brighid (I just see her in this card)
15 the Devil= Shiva, Cailleach (several others I think could go here, tricksters for example)
16 the Tower= Loki (he tends to reveal deceptions while using them, as well as encouraging people to look beyond how things seem)
17 the Star= Brighid, Freya, Ostara, Sophia (any goddess that helps you look inward and outward for balance and wisedom, I think)
18 the Moon= Diana, Luna/Selene, Mani, Hecate (lots of options here!)
19 the Sun= Apollo, Aine, Bast, Sekhmet, Freyr, Etain...
20 Judgement= Tyr, Zeus, Odin
21 the World= Gaia

Of course, this is all according to my own, personal associations between the cards and specific deities. As I said, I think it really depends on the reader, the person one is doing the reading for, the purpose of the reading, etc.

Cool Heartsong!...I think just about all decks that are based on the traditional 22 archetypal images would work.
Also, for me...I would use the Morrigan with the death card, if I were the querent of endings. :fairy:

Nice...are all of these in a Greek pantheon? Because as I was looking at Heartsongs list I was wondering if we could list deities that are from the same area of origin, I'm not sure if I could match 22 Celtic Gods and Goddesses. :(

.

Ha, I like this thread.

This gets into the concept of archetypes, so yes WiccanTeen7, gods, the tarot, all these things are related. They are part of what it means to live a human existence, the emotional tableau that is our lives. Any pantheon could be used, as we project our humanity onto their stories (otherwise, we probably wouldn't really be interested in "the gods," lol). It is our habit to anthropomorphize everything and everybody around us. haha

People with a penchant for psychology tend to love this kind of stuff. What came to my mind when I saw this was the work of a few people, who also explored the role of archetypes in our lives, including: Carl Gustav Jung, and more recently, Carolyn Myss, and one of Carolyn's past students who is a noted astrologer in his own right, Robert Ohotto. Their work is centered in helping their clients understand which archetypal patterns they have chosen to play out in their lives.

Fun. :)

has anyone thought about there being a need for more then one god to choose from to make it a good Significator

im mean think about it this way
when you use a significator to help you within your spread you need a different aspect of each card for different spreads

so when choosing the card specifically i would need to have a god with a specific aspect for the given reading,

almost all of your chooses focus on one god, when in actuality you need two or three in each slot to represent each aspect of the card as a whole because all cards have multiple meanings

dose that makes since if not im sorry for saying anything ><

Aw, thank you, Firebird. smileylove

Oooh, those are all good suggestions! In all honesty, Arianrhod was my first choice for the Star, but I thought about it at the last minute, haha. I hesitated to include Merlin, but I do agree that he would be an excellent choice for either (or both) the Hermit or the Magician. And yes, definitely, absolutely multiples. I just listed pretty much one in each slot, for lack of a better term, as a starter, but as you and BabyBear point out, there probably should be more than one in each.
