Runic Divination Bowls

Postby Heartsong » Thu May 15, 2014 11:33 am

*GASP* :surprisedwitch: I am so going to make one of these!! I'm thinking you could have bind runes along the interior of the bowl not only for divination, but also for offerings. For me, that would be Odin and Freya, but other gods could absolutely be carved or burnt into the wood if you wanted to dedicate it to them. :D

ACK!!! How gorgeous!!! I especially love the first one ... But I'm curious; how would it work for divination, you think?

Off the top of my head, I think entering a light trance and then gazing into the bowl would help pull your attention to the runes that are going to be relevant in that divination. I think too that it's possible to simply look into the bowl and see what runes you pick up on from the images in it. With the complexity of the designs in these two bowls, it's likely that you wouldn't see the same runes every time.

Oh, that's a cool idea! I was also wondering if perhaps you could drop a pine needle or something into the bowl and see if it gravitates towards a particular rune ...

I like that! :D I was thinking too that perhaps, if the bowl was the right shape and shallow depth, you could drop seeds (acorns are the first thing that come to mind for me) as well.

.

They're just cool, period. They provide a nice "charged" container in which to store something, like a rune casting set, or related objects. And they're just beautiful to look at, even if nothing else is "done" with them, giving a magical feeling to a space. I love how there's both Celtic ogham and Nordic runes, they look beautiful together. Dropping acorns or pine needles for divination are fantastic ideas.

Thanks for sharing, Heartsong.

Aren't they're gorgeous?! I think we all need one, lol. I love when people bump this post up again, because I never get tired at looking at these two lovely items. I also love the great ideas people posted about possible ways to utilize
them.

I'm baffled as of why haven't I noticed this post earlier?
Now I really need to find a wooden bowl I could carve. I just really adore the idea of an offering bowl like this!

I think the Proto-Bulgarian symbols you posted about might be interesting for this (where is that post, anyway, I tried to link to it here but couldn't find it, wanted to add it to my grimoire).

I think the symbols in these bowls are not carved, but applied via burning in a process called pyrography.

Here it is :) protobulgarian-runic-talismans-t26608.html?hilit=runic%20talismans#p202790
Yeah, I thought the exact same thing.
And I have a pyrography machine (or thing :) ) somewhere in my mom's house - my brother used to do things like that.
Now I'll have to look for both wooden bowl and the pyrography thingy :D

Oh, great, thanks for the link. I love languages, and then especially the magical uses of languages. And I like the magical and other information you share with us here about Bulgaria. It's a window into the culture we could only get first hand, a kind of virtual tour we probably could not get otherwise.

Yeah, I've been meaning to buy one of those pyrography thingies myself. A kit with several tips is only about $15 at a local crafts store. Things like these bowls really inspire me.

Thanks, YanaKhan.

I love different alphabets and often incorporate them in my work. With Bulgar runes, however, it's a little more complicated, because there are too many of them and I don't know what some of them mean. Others I have found have a specific meaning for me and because there are sometimes 3 - 4 runes for a letter, I need to work a little on which one I should use.
Anyway, I do love sharing what I know and people who are interested make it worth it :) So thanks, Kass :)
