Herbal Infused Oil. A question or two.

Postby EveningWithAstaroth » Mon Feb 26, 2018 12:23 pm

Hello.

Last night I made up an herbal oil blend for the first time.

I am concerned and wondering a few things about it. Firstly I will list ingredients here to help with answering my questions if a list of ingredients would help:

1. Coconut Oil.
2. Olive Oil.
3. Rose Petals.
4. 3 Cinnamon Sticks.
5. Marigold.
6. 1 Crushed Sandalwood Incense Cone.
7. Ground Orange Peel.
8. Salt.
9. 3 Large Pinches Lavender.
10. 3 Large Pinches Peppermint.
11. 1 Dose Ground Nutmeg- or 1 Shake of Container.
12. 2 Large Handfuls Flaxseed.
13. Oil of 3 Cod Liver Oil Pills.
14. 3-4 Small Orange Peelings. Non Ground.
15. Pepper.

Alright those are the ingredients. My questions are I have noticed a bit of separation of oil at the top of the liquid in the mason jar. What is it this could be? It is a small amount of discolored oil. I used no water at all in my recipe, and made sure the pan had been wiped down before use. Is this a separation of the different oils? Could it be more likely that it is the cod liver oil separated?

My next question is, could this type of infused oil be used in an oil diffuser at all without having to separate the oil at the top and using that? (Especially if it is a case of the Cod Liver oil haha).

This could be used as an aromatic massage oil correct?

Finally, I have been looking to pick up an oil diffuser. Yet I am not entirely sure how they work, and the store I plan to pick them up from does not actually have directions of usage printed on the items, not even on the paper tags on them. This may sound like a stupid question, but personally I don't believe in stupid questions- I find questioning things more so a good quality to have- but how do you use an oil diffuser? I've not used one ever, but have used wax warmers. I have read you use water in it, with some drops of the scented oil in the water and it is then warmed ( The water oil mixture) with a tea light candle for a heat source which may create steam and disperse the scent of the oil being used. But and this may be an utterly ignorant question here- where does the water and the candle go? Do you put the water and oil mixture in the top area, and the candle underneath? This seems to make more sense to me, or is it something else entirely?

Thank you all for your patience and time reading.

Blessings.

Hey,

You used olive oil, coconut oil and cod liver oil. I can't tell you what separated from what but they do separate.
Give it a shake and you are ready to use!

I have 2 different diffusers. One produces steam the other work with the heat of the lamp.
Bouth are used with water and about 10-30 drops of oil.

Hi Blue-Moon.

Thank you very much for the response. I picked up a couple oil warmers that work with the heat of a tea light candle yesterday. I am pretty certain the candle goes inside under the dish.

I also made up a batch last night that smelt pretty delicious, so I will keep in mind how I made up that batch. It smelt like fried fast food french fries at first, and I didn't use any food products but it must have been some ingredient I used. I ended up throwing in a piece of a strawberry chocolate incense stick, and it had this strawberry, chocolate, french fry scent.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Bluerose,

Currently what I had ended up doing is finding out that it would indeed harden which is exactly what I had wanted it to do. I had plans of making a lotion with it, which I have done. I made up the herbal oil, I also added to it those cod liver oil pills, and I have also after a few days added some vitamin E pills- or the oil from the capsule rather.

After adding the vitamin E oil, I added to the herbal infused oil some body/ skin lotion I had recently purchased in a tube, just some cheap lotion- if I remember correctly it was a type of mint and rosemary (perhaps) scent. Something along those lines.

So I added lotion to it, and have essentially turned it into a body lotion like I had originally intended for it.

I call it Abundant Love Potion Lotion- which was the original title I had set for it, based off the magical properties of the ingredients used. I came upon the title after looking here at the forum somewhere at the stickied list of correspondences and finding that indeed much of what I used for herbal ingredients had an association with love- including abundance, and fidelity. So that helped figure if magical properties are taken into consideration having a small list at hand of the different properties of the herbs would help come up with a theme and title for the lotion, which ultimately it did exactly that.

Personally I have not yet tried the lotion myself, I will have to give it a try here soon, for now I've had it stored.

I do plan to try and pick up more olive based oil, to make up a batch of the stuff I made after this original "Love Oil".

The second batch I made smelled like strawberry chocolate covered french fries, and I would probably be more inclined to use this variety as an oil diffuser or massage oil.

This oil was capable of making me pretty hungry while I simmered it, in which the thought came to me that perhaps it would serve as a natural appetite enhancing oil, could be used on the body as a massage oil with perhaps benefits of increasing the appetite in individual's depressed whom have suffered appetite loss.

That is essentially the uses I have currently planned.

EDIT: Having read your question Bluerose, I did grab the oil out of its storage drawer to try some, and to check on it, and make sure all was well in the case of mold, had found it in good shape, and then I applied it to my own skin to try it, in so far it appears to have a very soothing like feel when applied to the skin, I attribute this to the Lavender and Peppermint. So far so good. My only concern with it is the scent is very potent, but that possibly goes in hand with how I made it, and wrote it to be made. I am not particularly not fond of the scent myself, but others may be for all I know. I found I made it to be rather sweet, it smells sweet when simmering, and retains some of that after having been finished and cooled.

I prefer the scent of my second attempt, but did not use many herbs in that recipe. I used a few things, but much less than I had in the first "Love Lotion" mixture.

So just an update on how it is working so far as a lotion, the scent is potent- completely eliminates even the scent of the body lotion mixed with it, but it actually has seemed so far to work very well on the skin, or at least my own. I do have very sensitive skin, so I am keeping my eyes open for any itching, rash, or any other such factor.
