Finished Athame

Postby Cyphir » Fri Aug 05, 2011 8:38 am

So, a few years ago, I went to a Ren Faire and picked up a nice double edged blade, it was just the cheap novelty ones and not really forged by a blacksmith. I had decided to take the whole assembly apart and create my own handle and really make it my own. I just finished it and have up loaded the pictures for you!

very nice! are you going to paint the handle black as is traditional for an athame or are you going to march to the beat of your own drum?

Ive actually thought about binding it in black leather. I've taken a deep liking to wood working. If I can get the tools for it, my next big project will be a cup and a goblet.

You could do a Celtic binding braid. I mean if you use leather for the handle. Or you could weave the leather as a handle cover. All you do is cut the leather in strips and use leather glue while weaving and sew it over the painted (of leather covered) handle. You athame looks wonderful. I wish I could do woodworking.

Great job. Where did the blade come from?

China, but I bought the blade at a Renaissance Faire. It came with a cheap plastic handle and cheesy metal detailing. I just worked the blade free and got rid of the rest.

China. Ha. Well even if it is a substandard blade; it doesn't matter. The handle is the main part, the blade is decoration.

Bound in leather. Still need to paint the wood black but it looks good!
